Historia
Mansur Abdulin fought in the front ranks of the Soviet infantry against the German invaders at Stalingrad, Kursk, and on the banks of the Dnieper. This is his extraordinary story. His vivid firsthand account of a ruthless war on the Eastern Front gives rare insight into the reality of the fighting and into the tactics and mentality of the Red Army's soldiers.

Arduous conditions of war on the eastern front
Revisado: 01-18-25
The experience of the Russian soldier who survived to tell his tell is always amazing the insight gained into their view of the great patriotic war. The carnage they endured is of epic proportions that are hard to fathom. To learn that although communist the government and the majority of the leadership. The average foot soldier wasn’t a communist. But also how the average man who bought into the ideology hook line and sinker (authors father). I think this shows the goodness of man yet also his naivety. Thus the saying “to not be a communist when you are young means you have no heart, to be a communist when you’re older means you have no brain”

Historia
The fighting between the German and Russian armies in the Rzhev Salient during World War II was so grisly, so murderous, and saw such vast losses that the troops called the campaign 'The Meat Grinder'. Though millions of men would fight and die there, the Rzhev Salient does not have the name recognition of Leningrad or Moscow. It has been largely ignored by Western historians – until now.

Title true to its word!
Revisado: 12-16-24
Very in depth and highlights the grind from both perspectives. Well researched! It felt
To grind at times but imagine being there and it highlights its futileness of the battle. I can say by the end of listening to it I was able to imagine the writers words in a geographical perspective.

Historia
Freddie Scappaticci was born in 1946 and raised in a deeply nationalist area of Belfast. When the Troubles broke out in 1969, he joined the Provisional IRA, where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming commander of Belfast in 1984. From the outside, Scappaticci appeared to be a dedicated volunteer, but inwardly, he had become disenchanted with the IRA and, in 1977, he started working for British intelligence.

More about the character StakeKnife
Revisado: 11-03-24
Insurgency is the most diabolical and backstabbing endeavor humans partake in. It makes regular organized crime pale in comparison to it brutality, paranoia, and supposed loyalty to cause. The British were culpable to the execution of their subjects, but ultimately played by the IRA and their overall success driven by Jerry Adams who is an evil genius, and I maybe to harsh in labeling him evil. As all wars take casualties, that have to be sacrificed for the greater goal. StakeKnife is also a good reference as well as Say Nothing, or Fisher of Men, among others, too see beyond the opaque story of the IRA/Sinn Finn, and the British.

Historia
Like many Germans, Berlin schoolboy Erwin Bartmann fell under the spell of the Zeitgeist cultivated by the Nazis. Convinced he was growing up in the best country in the world, he dreamt of joining the Leibstandarte, Hitler's elite Waffen SS unit. Tall, blond, blue-eyed, and just 17-years-old, Erwin fulfilled his dream on Mayday 1941, when he gave up his apprenticeship at the Glaser bakery in Memeler Strasse and walked into the Lichterfelde barracks in Berlin as a raw, volunteer recruit.

Interesting
Revisado: 11-03-24
I thought this to be a very interesting story from a not often heard perspective. A true warrior patriot to his country and way of life. We hear a lot about the SS from a singular perspective. Only the writer knows if he told the absolute truth of action on the eastern front. But based on other books consumed and understanding of the German culture I have no reason to doubt his reflections. The eastern front was an absolute meat grinder and where absolute war was practiced. But humanity always seems to prevail at a multitude of levels regardless of the difficulty of the situation and the perpetrators. People can be brought to do unspeakable evil and also show unexpected compassion.

It was a moment unique in human history: the face-to-face meeting between two men from civilizations a world apart. In 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived on the shores of Mexico, determined not only to expand the Spanish empire but to convert the natives to Catholicism and carry off a fortune in gold. That he saw nothing paradoxical in his intentions is one of the most remarkable and tragic aspects of this unforgettable story.

Incredible story of conquest in the western hemisphere. The Aztec were an incredible culture and I walked away with a new understanding and belief on their way of life.

Historia
As a Russian recruit in World War II, Ivan Makarov witnessed General Chuikov pull out his pistol and shoot their regimental commander as a traitor. That was on his first day at the front. Thrown into an open field to face German tanks and artillery fire, with only rifles and machine guns to defend themselves with, almost 2,000 men of his regiment were wiped out in only six days at the Eastern Front. At this rate, Ivan struggled to comprehend how he would survive the hundreds of battles that lay before him, with death seeming to be the only certainty.

Historia
The rulers’ mistakes are paid for with the blood of the people. This is shown in history both recent and ancient, time and time again. It was no different for an Austrian mountain farmer’s son who was thrown into the carnage of the Eastern Front. He was in the prime of his youth, and the German Reich was already close to losing the war. In ripe-old age, he remembers those dark hours that have haunted him throughout his life.

Good common soldier story
Revisado: 09-12-24
Good story about action and conditions on the eastern front. The experience of the soldier regardless of the side they fought is always the same. Loss of friends, difficult conditions, overcoming sheer terror, this is the timeless experience of those that fight for their ideals of what they believe to be right.

Well researched
Revisado: 09-07-24
What I liked is the amount of research he did into the subject and the fact he has never embarked on an enlightening journey using what he talks about in the book and his objectivity is stellar. The things he talked about and researched and found out are things I had come to believe in my own underage of my experience but learned the finer points of the origin and the disappearance of the the kukion and other elixirs used throughout time. Cheers to the author and his well documented and thoroughly researched history. If you have taken a psychedelic journey or are considering it this book will enlighten you on the bigger picture involved and history of humanity journey and its interruption from our societies and hopefully the reintroduction into our cultures which in this fast pace me me me society we live.

Of all the colorful cutthroats who scoured the seas in search of plunder during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century, none was more ferocious or notorious than Blackbeard. As unforgettable as his savage career was, much of Blackbeard's life has been shrouded in mystery - until now. Drawing on vivid descriptions of Blackbeard's attacks from his rare surviving victims, pirate expert Angus Konstam traces Blackbeard's career from its beginnings to his final defeat in a tremendous sea battle near his base at Ocracoke Island

You can tell by consuming this book the author did ALOT of research. But it’s more of activities of pirates during the time of Blackbeard. As there is a lot of information that doesn’t really pertain to the pirate but was learned during the time researching someone who doesn’t have a volume of information about him compared to the time spent in the book.
