Historia
When painter Winslow Homer first sailed into the Gulf of Mexico, he was struck by its "special kind of providence." Indeed, the Gulf presented itself as America's sea - bound by geography, culture, and tradition to the national experience - and yet, there has never been a comprehensive history of the Gulf until now. And so, in this rich and original work that explores the Gulf through our human connection with the sea, environmental historian Jack E. Davis finally places this exceptional region into the American mythos in a sweeping history that extends from the Pleistocene age to the 21st century.

Not boring history! The stuff you didn't learn in school!

Should be required reading/listening for all Americans living in this region. Interesting focus on how regional ecology influences civilization. Engaging naration.

Please pay for professional narrators!
Revisado: 06-25-21
I love Mr. Kurlansky's books and own many of them, but a couple have been degraded by the quality of narration. This is one of them. Mr. Kurlansky is a phenomenal writer and excellent storyteller, but his narration sounds like the most dry and boring history professor you ever had choking on his own mustache! This is a genuinely interesting, and arguably important, book about resource conservation, but I have to force myself to listen while trying to ignore the choppy un-nuanced narration. I would pay extra for another copy of this book read by a more dynamic narrator, it doesn't even need to be George Guidell! I have gotten into the habit of being hesitant to buy audiobooks if they are read by the author (this is more of a problem for American authors than British for some reason). This book would not have been purchased, after I listened to the preview, if it were by an author of less renown than Mr. Kurlansky. Do yourself a favor and buy the print copy.

Great mystery, atrocious narration
Revisado: 05-04-21
This is a great story. The narration is very very very bad. I forced myself to listen because the story was intriguing. I may listen to the next book because it is by a different narrator. I may get the Kindle for the other series by these authors so I can avoid the terrible narrator.

Terrible narrator, book might be great otherwise
Revisado: 09-16-17
The most stilted narrator ever! Can't be improved by increasing playback speed to 1.25x. Very disappointing since I really like owls and natural history books in general.

Historia
Season of the Gar is a fang-infested, monster-headed, armor-plated romp through the prehistoric swamps and murky rivers of America's most feared and demonized fish. Follow Mark Spitzer on his lengthy and often frustrating quest from Texas and Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas to catch his own gar. Read about his sometimes bizarre angling adventures in search of this air-breathing freshwater giant (up to ten feet in length and well over three hundred pounds) as he separates fact from fiction.

Could have been passable
Revisado: 04-13-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who don't mind awful narration and forced gonzo journalism.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Diction and pronunciation were terrible. Not a professional narrator at all! The Southern accent could have been an asset for the setting of the book if the narrator had been a professional.
Any additional comments?
This could have potentially been a good non-fiction natural/social history like Kurlansky's oyster and cod books. Such a work would have been very beneficial to the cause of alligator gar conservation. It could have been a great fishing/outdoor book too. Unfortunately the author felt the need to attempt to emulate Hunter Thompson at random intervals throughout the narrative. This nonsense combined with the atrocious narration was a total deal-breaker. I only listened to the whole thing without returning it because gar are so interesting and I was hoping the book could be salvaged. I was wrong.
