Superb performance
Revisado: 11-10-17
These books (Part 1 and 2) aren't that good. They give an overview of Churchill's life, glossing over controversies, leaving out details that would be to the detriment of the man, subtly suggesting that Churchill was without any serious faults. It paints an entertaining picture, but is rather superficial.
However, if you want a virtuoso performance by an incredible reader, this is your book. Rodska has a wonderful Churchill-accent and he can seamlessly switch from normal to Winston and back in one sentence. But that's just the beginning: I've heard American, Irish, French, German, Australian and a few more and that, paired with a lively reading make this a magnificent performance. A few times I became irritated by the hagiographic tendencies of the writer and wanted to put it down, but the joy of listening to this reader kept me going.

Entertaining and virtuoso performance
Revisado: 09-27-17
The two parts of Martin Gilbert's tome are OK: a rather matter-of-fact recounting of Churchill's life. I sometimes missed some interpretation of events and decisions.
The performance by Rodska is wonderful. Dramatic, but not over the top, well paced and intelligent. And the way he switches between accents is virtuosic, going seamlessly from "Winstonesque" to South African to posh or whatever else the text throws at him (though it is somewhat disconcerting to hear a quote from an 8 year old Winston with the intonation we're all familiar with).

Impossible as an audiobook
Revisado: 03-25-17
This is an impossible listen. It's a good book, the narrator does his best, but really... With an avalanche of strange names, codenames, dates and whatnot I couldn't possibly follow the story without the need to go back and forth between pages to check if agent Otto is the same man as Viktor So-and-so etc. Spying is a murky business and getting to understand double and triple cross isn't possible with an audiobook.

Better read than listened to
Revisado: 03-25-17
This is one of those books that you can better read than listen to. The subject matter is very well treated, the narrator does a well enough job, but a there's a lot to ingest and a regular need to look back a few pages at a name or a date. And that, as we all know, is rather difficult with an audiobook.

Historia
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

German is hard to pronounce
Revisado: 06-16-16
Any additional comments?
Interesting book and well-read as far as tempo and intonation are concerned. But why can't an American reader inform himself on the right pronunciation of the numerous German words? He almost always gets it wrong, sometimes laughably so, and often it takes quite some time to figure out what he's trying to say. It detracts from a reasonably good performance.
