Unfortunate
Revisado: 01-29-25
If you are interested in this series AND in the Stormlight archive, oh well. The same two narrators do both seriea and you will think you are listening to characters in the other series when listening to the one. Very irritating honestly and jarring. Neither is good enough to do both.

Pathos, humanity, poetry, and the backdrop of another story. Well done! And the nature of the relationship was beautifully discreet. Petkoff is superb.

Pretty bad
Revisado: 06-23-22
The reader is terrible at multiple voices. The story drags and is stupid. I have liked much of Feist. Not this. It’s just boring.

Didn’t love it
Revisado: 03-22-22
The narrator for Chris has trouble with delivery missing the meaning of sentences by screwing up the stress and release frequently. But worse is how flippant his delivery is on serious subjects. Party and play is treated very casually. I’ve been there and done that: it’s not casual, and it’s only fun in the midst of the drug-addled haze. I wish the narrator for Chris was just more sober and serious.

Sigh
Revisado: 02-19-21
The woman narrator is so self-conscious in her reading... she’s horrible. She hangs on consonants and vowels in weird ways. It’s very distracting because it’s not the way normal people speak. Her male voices are terrible too.
Decent story tho’.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

Just OK
Revisado: 04-13-19
He definitely is better nuanced than many of these history profs, but his prejudices come through. For example, he likes to call out the religious conflicts — the way modern Europeans live to mock all religions — and their divisiveness. But he seems largely unaware of the parallel divisions occurring among historians vis a vis the interpretation of history. He acts like the latter is just a given while the former is risible.

Integrated approaches to teaching Greek and Roman history are a rarity in academia. Most scholars are historians of either Greek or Roman history and perform research solely in that specific field, an approach that author and award-winning Professor Robert Garland considers questionable. In these 36 passionate lectures, he provides and impressive and rare opportunity to understand the two dominant cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world in relation to one another-a relationship that has virtually no parallel in world history.

Not great
Revisado: 09-26-18
This is really stroke fiction. My partner and I listened. The plot was a good one broken up by three very long and explicit sex scenes. We’re not opposed to some of that, but this was really too much for an Audible book. I mean, Nifty is a lot cheaper. And with almost every other chapter basically the same description of long and turgid sex, it really belongs there. It probably should be renamed “Jamie’s c&$k”.

Great ... but not
Revisado: 06-16-18
I will update this over time but had to let people know right away what I perceive. The story is good. I enjoyed the previous two and have not been disappointed so far. The one thing that is bad on this, really, absolutely terrible are the readers. Neither the male nor the female reader really can't make different voices well at all. The male makes different voices mostly through collapsing his airway and doing strange mumbling accents. He voices Navani likes she's a drunk, slurring, lady of the night, or an idiot. And throughout the entire first set of readings he does, plus sporadically thereafter, he reads everything like he's imitating Agent Smith from Matrix. It's unbelievably distracting. The woman is marginally better but not much. She's obviously much better at voicing women (and not because she is a woman herself; she can't make a man's sound, but at least she doesn't distort the voices the way the male reader does). But her voicing of Shallan's spren is horrible. That spren hums according to Sanderson: she interprets "hum" to be something like the noises "Pat" from SNL makes. It's absolutely horrible and irritating.
