Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

So well written!

Crisp, clear and poignant!!! An eye opener. Hope it will help others who have a narcissistic mom to realize it and get help.

Historia
Mental manipulation happens every day. In relationships, at work, everywhere. If you don't know how to recognize it and defend against it, you are being exploited and being taken advantage of. I'm sure you've felt that voice in the back of your head when an interaction doesn't feel quite right. Asking yourself if something shady is going on. Do you want to understand what is really happening in these interactions? And do you want to know how to recognize all the times you're being manipulated without even realizing it? If so, then you’ve come to the right place.

First half great-second half not so much
Revisado: 04-05-19
The explanations and tactics a manipulator uses was very helpful but the second half was just a repeat and only ever spoke if romantic situations. What about when a coworker manipulates the boss against you or others? What if the manipulator is a close relative? Much harder in many ways

Good but...
Revisado: 08-09-18
Learned quite a bit from the facts! Straying from the facts to make political statements got tiresome and irrelevant. A lot of emphasis on people’s jobs so wish there was something other than very long meditation that could help those who feel or are stuck in a bad domestic situation.

Totally written for anyone
Revisado: 06-11-17
What made the experience of listening to Captivate the most enjoyable?
Vanessa's upbeat and down to earth explanation of each of her points. When she mentions an anti-networking group, I laughed out loud and can't wait to look it up to see if there is one in my area.
What did you like best about this story?
That she is a recovering awkward person. Being a major introvert, I am not good around people. This book helped lighten my shy "burden"
What does Vanessa Van Edwards bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her personality
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A film about anti-networking
Any additional comments?
I never take the time to write reviews but I cannot say enough good about this book.
