Yes, it's long, it's wordy, it's dense - it's Neal! The math and science aspect is lovely and well researched, and I imagine will be a good primer for the journey to come.

This book found me through the convoluted tastes and tangents of Reddit, and I am so very grateful that it did. Exploring themes of feminism, creativity, destiny and choice, it is written in a sharp literary voice that made my heart sing. The female narration is excellent, though I found it more accessible at 0.9 playing speed. The male narrator, on the other hand, has an inflection pattern to his delivery that I found grating.

Overall a wondrous listening experience that swept me along and left me feeling content - yet still seeking - at the end.

What did you love best about This Is How?

It really does give you advice on just about everything in life. The best advice, which is basically: take control of your life by owning your decisions and accepting the consequences. Burroughs' voice (both how he writes and how he reads) makes big truths seem like common sense. One of my favourite authors.

What other book might you compare This Is How to and why?

There really is no comparison... The Bible? Or rather, a bible for reasonable people who actually think about things. A Desiderata without the mush. A straight talk from the part of yourself that still knows what it's all about.

What does Augusten Burroughs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His emphases and pauses highlight different nuances (I have also read the printed version) and made the essays even more relatable.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from This Is How?

Ummm... everything! The one insight that had the biggest impact on me is: "At the heart of all unhappiness lies dishonesty." But that's just one of many.

Any additional comments?

Buy it. Listen to it. Live it. Repeat.

Would you listen to Joseph Anton again? Why?

Definitely, in a few years' time! I'm sure there were many subtle gems of wisdom that I missed on the first listen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Joseph Anton?

The crash with the truck and the aftermath thereof. Really brought home how much Rushdie's life had moved into alien territory.

What about Salman Rushdie and Sam Dastor ’s performance did you like?

It's a long book and a detailed story that could have become tedious with a less skilled reader. Dastor's performance kept me engaged and worked so well with Rushdie's prose rhythm.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this book... for 27 hours! Makes you look for opportunities to listen.

Any additional comments?

Even someone who is not a Rushdie fan will enjoy this tale of a life that few of us has imagined; the story of a life lived in hiding, under a pseudonym, in full view of constant surveillance and protection, all the while knowing that thousands of people would kill you on sight if they had the chance. It seems too unreal to be true and yet it is.

Live the groupie life vicariously through Pamela

What did you love best about I'm with the Band?

Pamela's anecdotes are full of little factoids about famous rockstars and their strange habits. The story shines with truth and the passion of a young rock-devotee that has never dulled. It's fantastic to hear the much older Pamela's asides and extra little tidbits of memories as she's reading her first memoir.

What did you like best about this story?

Pamela des Barres, as founding member of the GTOs, literally stood at the very forefront of the groupie movement. She came onto "the scene" right at the start of the rock revolution and immersed herself in a world that was rapidly changing. Unlike today's glamour-obsessed fangirls, the true groupies lived to inspire, comfort, nurture and pleasure the talent that inspired them - this is probably the most pertinent revelation from the book.

What three words best describe Pamela Des Barres’s voice?

Pamela's voice is filled with enthusiasm, lots of tonal shifts and a slight over-the-top recounting. If you manage to ignore the little bits of song she delivers wistfully (but very off-key), she has a true storyteller's timbre and pace.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Knowing Pamela's married name, when she described meeting her would-be husband for the first time (Michael des Barres), I felt an instant tingle of anticipation. When she elaborated on their relationship and the love they shared, it made me melancholy for loves past and present.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait to read the sequel and see how Miss Pamela applied her groupie smarts to the world of wife- and motherhood.
