Historia
In The Cactus Air Force, Pacific War expert Thomas McKelvey Cleaver worked closely with Eric to build on his collection of diary entries, interviews and first-hand accounts to create a vivid narrative of the struggle in the air over the island of Guadalcanal between August 20 and November 15, 1942.

Great telling of a very close long long battle
Revisado: 01-10-24
This was a very pitched battle over a long period of time. This is where the US became the dominant strength….barely. Very good balance of staying focused on the air arm yet giving focus on important land and sea battles. Also good balance of telling of battles big picture and delving into personal accounts mostly derived from diaries and the like.

Historia
On 27 October 1942, four "Long Lance" torpedoes fired by the Japanese destroyers Makigumo and Akigumo exploded in the hull of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8). Minutes later, the ship that had launched the Doolitte Raid six months earlier slipped beneath the waves of the Coral Sea 100 miles northeast of the island of Guadalcanal and just north of the Santa Cruz Islands, taking with her 140 of her sailors. With the loss of Hornet, the United States Navy now had one aircraft carrier left in the South Pacific.

Great first person account; mostly diary/letter
Revisado: 09-11-23
I was leery of a more strategic view, but this had great first person accounts most of which were written in diaries or letters soon after an event

Historia
The Dambusters were the go-to forces for dangerous precision attacks: They bombed Hitler's prize battleship, Tirpitz, as well as rocket sites, weapon strongholds, and the dams at the heart of the industrial Ruhr; they targeted enemy leaders including Hitler and Mussolini; and they created a false fleet on D-day, which fooled the Germans. But they also suffered brutal losses, with 75 percent of 617 Squadron killed in action by the end of the war.

One of my favorite WW2 reads
Revisado: 08-13-23
Face it, you would rather read about an elite squadron rather than a middle of the road squadron (unless you are a serious or semi-serious historian. This book does not disappoint. Good balance between big picture and accounts of trying to get out of an aircraft going down. Does provide accounts of girlfriends, fear factor, pranks, superstition and the like. The four stars of the performance reflects a good reading, but not memorable

Historia
On his 19th birthday, James E. Brown tries to fake to his flight instructor that he has flown before. On his 21st birthday, Brown is on his way home after logging 85 missions in a P-47 fighter over Italy, France, and Germany. Brown's stories surrounding his training and combat experiences in World War II reveal brushes with death, continuous peril and, ultimately, a coming of age for a young man whose freshman year in college becomes instead a heroic engagement with one of the fiercest enemies his country has ever encountered.

Realistic but not top of the line
Revisado: 08-01-23
Nothing wrong with this, but not that notable
He doesn’t enter combat till November 1944, Italy
Typical story is going across enemy lines, zig-zag through heavy flak to drop bombs on a bridge or the like. Each story too much like the previous. This is of course more the story of a typical pilot on typical missions being a typical hero

Historia
Here at last is a history of England that is designed to entertain as well as inform and that will delight the armchair traveler, the tourist, or just about anyone interested in history. No people have engendered quite so much acclaim or earned so much censure as the English: extolled as the Athenians of modern times, yet hammered for their self-satisfaction and hypocrisy. But their history has been a spectacular one.

This title currently included with membership. I would heartily advise that you jump ahead to the chapters you can best relate to (for me WWII onwards, for you it may be Princess Di onwards) a great balance between laying down a history and keeping it entertaining

In this plainspoken but eloquent narrative, we live each minute at MacDonald's side, sharing in all of combat's misery, terror, and drama. How this green commander gains his men's loyalty in the snows of war-torn Europe is one of the most unforgettable war stories of all time.

Unique in that captain is not a private nor general
Revisado: 07-25-22
He arrives inEurope a little before Battle of the Bulge, so limited in that way. Interesting to hear it from an officers point of view who is not right on the front line, but not that far behind the line. You get the “don’t let me screw up” of early days, the fog of war, the following of orders even when they seem like a bad idea, being on the ground when the Battle of the Bulge steamroller comes at you, and the very late stages of the war when resistance is crumbling, masses of surrendering and capturing multiple towns in one day

Historia
The story of Tang and her gallant crew ranks with the most amazing of naval history. Between August 1943 when she was commissioned and her loss in fall 1944, Tang completed four missions and was on her fifth in the Formosa Strait, single-handedly demolishing a convey. During this time, Tang had one captain: Commander Richard Hetherington O'Kane. Together, Tang, her crew of 86 men, and her captain sank more tonnage and more enemy ships than any other submarine on active patrol.

My favorite ww2 sub story from commander point of view. You get a good idea of the strategy used. Well read.
