Historia
The world begins to suffer an escalating and sensational series of natural disasters, and two marine biologists begin to develop a theory that the cause lies in the oceans, where an entity know as the Yrr has developed a massive network of single-cell organisms. It is wreaking havoc in order to prevent humankind from destroying the Earth's ecological balance forever. The Americans, under the ruthless General Judith Lee, take a more pragmatic approach than the scientists, seeking to wipe out the being of the deep.

Great fun!
Revisado: 09-29-24
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I’m not sure that I’ve ever read an eco-thriller before but the story and characters were well-crafted and the writing was gripping. Wonderfully researched. Narration subtle and suited to the story. Tone shift towards the end, with some religious and mystical themes, with some Hollywood thriller scaffolding. I’m not sure if it worked well all the way through but generally no complaints.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Scalzi at his best
Revisado: 07-10-24
I love this novella, as well as the two follow-ups. They are just great fun - compact plot, great characters, a really cool premise and beautifully performed. I am a big admirer of Scalzi generally but these might be my favourite so far from his impressive body of work. The fact that they're free on Audible is just the cherry on top.

Historia
The Romans have long since departed, and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. But at last the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased. The Buried Giant begins as a couple, Axl and Beatrice, set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen for years. They expect to face many hazards--some strange and otherworldly--but they cannot yet foresee how their journey will reveal to them dark and forgotten corners of their love for one another.

Masterful but not my favourite
Revisado: 07-10-24
I'm a big fan of Remains of the Day, as well as Klara and the Sun, and really I think Ishiguro has the most gorgeous talent for writing. I still loved his writing in this book. He has a way of capturing a mood, and expressing big ideas through small stories with incredible empathy, and without this ever feeling pithy or forced. The premise of the book is also very interesting and different, with a meaningful story that begs to be told. But despite all this, the book was a struggle to get through if I'm completely honest. I found myself drifting off a bit at times, disconnecting from the story and characters. I might return to it in a few years and see if I feel differently.

Historia
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there's an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can't have the planet, they're sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there's something wrong with Murderbot; it isn't running within normal operational parameters.

I love the first 4 instalments of the Murderbot Diaries but each of the last 3 has been slightly less compelling for some reason. This one really didn’t feel like it lived up to its potential.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Revisado: 07-03-24
I love this book and the next 3 in the series. A really fun and engaging read, with great characters and narration, and the author’s world-building is genuinely compelling. It gave me a bit of an oomph feeling initially to spend a whole credit on such a short book but no regrets in the end.

Historia
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time.

Thought-provoking and Beautifully Narrated
Revisado: 10-09-14
Even if you don't care for a zombie novel, this is just a great book - full of interesting ideas, social commentary and wonderful stories. Some of the individual accounts have stuck with me in a way that I wasn't expecting. The narration was very absorbing and added a level of realism, even if the accents weren't always spot on. Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook!

Engaging Sci-Fi Fun
Revisado: 10-09-14
There is not much to be said except that I absolutely loved this audiobook! Even more of an indication of what an engaging book it is - my partner (who has read about 3 fiction books in his whole life and considers fiction to be something of a waste of time) also loved it. It's just great fun, and I was much too young in the 80s to know even half of the gaming references. Couldn't wait to get back in the car each day.
