Great story, narrator was average

My only complaint is that the narrator didn’t do a great job vocally distinguishing characters. At times it was hard to follow which character was speaking, especially since I was welding during most of the book. The author has an awesome audiobook voice. He read the afterward and I couldn’t help wishing he had read the whole thing. Five star sci-fi, though, even if you’re not a fan of the games.

The actual reading of this story was well-directed and kept me listening. I was particularly captivated by the table read sections, which felt organic and immersive. However, the story itself did not live up to the expectations set by the performance. It seems like the author didn’t really know how to tie everything up at the end. A lot of build-up for a disappointing payoff.

I found the facts and lore surrounding the Skinwalker Ranch case fascinating and compelling. The authors make a solid case that the extremely weird phenomena manifesting at that location are more than simply hallucinations, delusions, or unscrupulous fame-seeking. However, they get a little off the rails in the last few chapters when they offer possible explanations (shamanism/DMT and multiverse “theory” prominently featured). That said, it’s a worthwhile read if you find high strangeness interesting.

The deus ex machina has taken over this series. Instantaneous travel powered by wishes and imagination, genius children solving the mystery with one tepid idea, and talking birds are major aspects in this latest installment of a once-great saga. The Enderverse can be done now.

Everyone of all political stripes should listen to this, but I would particularly recommend it to young conservatives and libertarians. It's hilarious, which makes its legitimate critiques of the worst political, cultural and economic products of capitalism more palatable.

This is an incredibly boring audiobook that begins with hours of stories about a land deal between an American farmer and a German petty noble that segues into more hours of stories about Grantsville women making livestock deals while stumbling through a tortuous process of starting a 'putting out' textile manufacturing system. It's like Flint got a bunch of economic historians to turn their articles and lectures into Ring of Fire fan fiction. Unfortunately for the gullible reader who just spent his second monthly credit on this arduous slog of an audiobook, the attempt was profoundly unsuccessful. Flint took what is often my favorite phase of alternative history scifi epics like Stirling's Emberverse/Nantucket series, the rebuilding of civilization/integration with local conditions, and drew it out to excruciating lengths. Kind of like this review I suppose...In any case, I recommend skipping this book.

The exploration of evolving replicant society and the implications of quantum theory vis a vis post-death consciousness was fascinating. The new species storyline was less interesting than those of the trilogy. There were a couple of eye-roll moments early on, namely a gratuitous dig at the "far right" and a thinly veiled nod to politcal transgenderism, that made me worry the Bobs had wokified, but they were just isolated blurbs. Overall it was a satisfying romp in the Bobiverse, but I won't be terribly disappointed if it's the last one.

One of my favorite alternative history sci-fi series. The addition of Weber after the first book vastly improved the story's historical literacy. Major story elements including the opening time travel event and the name and profession of the main character seem ripped off from Stirling, but that could be coincidence. The combination of neoliberal economics and neoconservative expansionist values expressed by the American characters is quite off-putting at times, but basically fall in line with post-Bretton Woods American domestic and foreign policy consensus and don't really detract from the quality of the story. Worth the credits.

This book was basically the thematic summary of Ben Shapiro Show commentary on last year's Democratic primary races. I guess he needed the whole book to flesh out his "disintegrationist" concept, but if you listened to his show regularly last year you don't really need to buy this book. Almost worth it to hear Ben doing his Beto, Bernie and Barack impressions though.

Radley Balko has opened my eyes to the real problem of policing in America. The policing tactics and attitudes that resulted in Breona Taylor's death are far better explained by this book than any of the nonsense being recommended to me by Audible. White Fragility, a book about anti-racism seminars written by Robin DiAngelo, a white woman who makes hundreds of thousands of dollars by selling her absurd, racist claptrap to major corporations, will do nothing to keep cops from killing innocent people. Rise of the Warrior Cop could.
