Historia
As the Emperor travels the galaxy at the head of his Great Crusade, few events are as important as rediscovering his scattered sons, the Primarchs, and bestowing them as the masters of their Legions. United, a Legion becomes a reflection of its Primarch, both in his strengths and his flaws. For the Twelfth Legion, once the War Hounds and now the World Eaters, the line between strength and flaw is almost impossible to separate.

Poignant Survey of the Fall of a Legion
Revisado: 03-14-25
Of all the emotions I thought I would feel reading a story about the mad berserkers of the World Eaters, sadness was right at the bottom. The origin of the Butchers Nails in the XIIth legion hits like an unexpected gut punch. With so many betrayals to choose from, it’s hard to decide which is the worst, but all set the legion on the blood soaked path they would walk for a hundred centuries to come.

Average Story, Above Average Cast
Revisado: 03-08-25
The plot is pretty much the definition of ‘middle of the road’ for a mystery/detective story. You have your obligatory hard boiled detective, corrupt official(s), villainous motives that end up connecting back to the protagonists, bog standard police techie whom the blunt detectives view as performing magic, and main characters keeping secrets from one another that could threaten their relationships. The pieces all fit together, they just don’t ‘wow’ as a cohesive whole.
Writing this as a radio play style audio drama also leads to some very clunky descriptive dialog that would never come out of a real persons mouth (characters describing what is happening to a person to another character who is in the same room for the sole benefit of the listener).
The cast does a good job with the material they’ve been given though. Aaron Paul delivers a solid performance as a world weary detective and Krysten Ritter does the same with his emotionally wounded and suspicious detective sister.
Overall, this is worth a listen as long as it is included in Audible subscriptions, but would not recommend using a credit/paying extra out of pocket.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Andy Serkis Vocal Talents are Front & Center
Revisado: 10-25-24
Listening to Mr. Serkis’ narration, I was constantly torn between being swept up in a dream-like trance and feeling phantom sympathy vocal fry from the throaty range of voices he puts on (Smaug conjuring images of ash, sulfur, and brimstone). Cannot recommend this listen highly enough even for those who have already read the book and I will happily be following on with the Lord of the Rings trilogy in the future.

Historia
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office?

Great Intro Survey

A fantastic “gateway drug” to incredibly interesting ancient Egyptian figures. Will definitely now be falling down a rabbit hole of more focused works on each of the female Kings covered in this work, their lives sounding every bit like plot inspiration for House of the Dragon.

As Guilliman, Regent of Terra, heads off to lead the Indomitus Crusade, he leaves behind a world still in turmoil, beset by cult activity. Stripped of its huge armies for the galactic offensive, recovery is precarious. The Custodians do what they can while keeping the Palace secure, and the Sisters of Silence rebuild their citadel on Luna. When the warship Phalanx returns, it seems that stability will at last be assured. However, as reconquest forces push out further into the slums, they come across signs that another mysterious foe is active.

Killer Multi-Narrator Performances
Revisado: 06-18-24
The Watchers of the Throne series is quickly rising up to the top of my favorites from Black Library. As if the unfolding story, told from the shifting perspectives of a Custodes, a Sister of Silence, and an Imperial bureaucrat caught in the middle of a plot worthy of a Hollywood 70’s political thriller, were not enough to keep you telling yourself you’ve got time for just “one” more chapter, Black Library’s decision to use a different narrator for each protagonist’s chapters creates an undeniable value add for the audio book over simply reading the text (the fact that each narrator does such a stellar job certainly helps). Would absolutely recommend this novel and its predecessor to anyone 40K curious.

Historia
One day in the spring of 2013, a box appeared outside a fourth-floor apartment door in Brooklyn. The recipient, who didn't know the sender, only knew she was supposed to bring this box to a friend, who would ferry it to another friend. Thus the biggest national security leak of the digital era was launched via the US Postal Service. This is just one of the odd, ironic details that emerges from the story of how Jessica Bruder and Dale Maharidge, two experienced journalists but security novices got drawn into the Edward Snowden story as behind-the-scenes players.

Half a Story
Revisado: 03-18-24
The problem with telling a story that starts so recently (a decade isn’t that long in the grand scheme of things), is that often it continues unfolding. The material covered is well delivered by the narrators, but from a 2024 perspective is begging for a “Part 2” covering Snowden’s slow turn into a Russian disinformation asset. The irony of Snowden seeking refuge from what he would describe as a dangerous, dystopian government spying on its own people from a dangerous, dystopian government actively spying on its own people and continuously cracking down on personal liberties is fertile ground for a story. A quick glance at Snowden’s Twitter posts since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine shows that he is very likely (either implicitly or explicitly) under pressure to criticize every one of Russia’s numerous enemies while never once mentioning the horrendous daily actions of his host nation, both abroad and domestic. Without full consideration of the rest of the story, this work cannot rate better than “okay”.

On the edge of the galaxy, a diplomatic mission to an alien planet takes a turn when the Legionnaires, an elite special fighting force, find themselves ambushed and stranded behind enemy lines. They struggle to survive under siege, waiting on a rescue that might never come. In the seedy starport of Ackabar, a young girl searches the crime-ridden gutters to avenge her father's murder; not far away, a double-dealing legionniare-turned-smuggler hunts an epic payday; and somewhere along the outer galaxy, a mysterious bounty hunter lies in wait.

Star Wars Meets Starship Troopers
Revisado: 02-24-24
Great start to a new series that feels like it can be as expansive as the Star Wars universe (and you can tell the authors must be fans of the galaxy far, far away). Legionnaire reminds you of a 21st century GWOT tactical view of a mission gone wrong whereas Galactic Outlaws really opens up the world building and introduces classic action/adventure character archetypes (several characters read as very close analogs to Boba Fett, Han Solo, and Chewbacca). Up to this point I’d only dabbled in some of the side story prequels like Forget Nothing 1/2 and Tin Man (which I did thoroughly enjoy). But now I’m officially in on the main story line. The hint at some quantum physics like “magic” towards the end definitely piques the curiosity for potential future outcomes.
