Insightful and enjoyable
Revisado: 12-17-24
Frustratingly it’s hard to know from a conservative biblical position whether or not liberals will think of this as conservative biblical propaganda. I think liberals should read this. It’s a very conservative commentary on the positive implications of biblical teaching, And the shaping of western civilization I think it’s fair, but I agree with most of its content. If you are a person who outright rejects the authority of holy scripture, you’re going to have a hard time appreciating anything that this book communicates. But you should still read it because there’s truth in it.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 03-09-24
The reading was wonderful. Smooth voice and the content was intelligible. That’s particularly good for science fiction. This is the third or fourth time I’ve read this book I’m about to start on the other two in the series. Lewis’ imaginary world is full of wonder of how our world should be. And gives us a lovely understanding of the corruption of humanity related to what humanity can be like, and should be like. It is a wonderful allegory, and the rest of the series points to the corruption of our intellectual elites, who only hunger for power and control. Differing from other dystopian texts, like 1984 and animal farm this series leaves me with hope for our race.

Historia
Leon Uris retums to the land of his acclaimed best-seller Exodus for an epic story of hate and love, vengeance and forgiveness. The Middle East is the powerful setting for this sweeping tale of a land where revenge is sacred and hatred noble. Where an Arab ruler tries to save his people from destruction but cannot save them from themselves. When violence spreads like a plague across the lands of Palestine - this is the time of The Haj.

Who knows what is true?
Revisado: 11-21-23
This was a difficult listen. It affirmed my expectations of the cruelty of radical Arabian Islamists and to some extent the moderate ones as well. It’s painful to hear so much reality in this form that (dare I say) is justified propaganda. It’s painful to listen because you hope beyond hope that something might change in the real world with self reflection. But early on we learn that self reflection, personal betterment, and virtuous growth isn’t just ignored; it is actively discouraged.

I was looking for an unabridged series of Trollope’s chronicles. This is a dramatization. Some hokiness

Who’s your audience?
Revisado: 12-20-22
I tried to like this and I agonized through the whole book. I’d say the story might be for a younger audience but the dialog i s peppered with too much foul language. This is a juvenile text performed decently though not compellingly. It was difficult to follow the plot line with too many unfamiliar and unenthusiastic characters. I’m not going to get those 35 hrs of my life back. There’s a lot better content out there somewhere.

Fun story but not for children with no moral compass
Revisado: 12-14-22
There’s some questionable ethics being promoted that young listeners could be misguided on. The idea that young people can act on what is “right” without going to the authorities is questionable. Underlying sentiment can unnecessarily undermine authority. Who’s to say that because a local sheriff is corrupt the FBI isn’t similarly corrupt. There’s too much theoretical ambiguity in this text for young readers.

Dealing with multi-generational anxiety
Revisado: 12-10-22
This sorry provided insights for me based on my own absentee and narcissistic father. Don’t expect them to see their own faults and the suffering they cause to others . This was a cathartic texts in that it doesn’t necessarily solve interpersonal relationships but helps you understand that you’re not alone in the human disfunction.

A confession and manifesto from a senior leader in the emerging church movement, A Generous Orthodoxy calls for a radical, Christ-centered orthodoxy of faith and practice in a missional, generous spirit. Brian McLaren argues for a post-liberal, post-conservative, post-protestant convergence, which will stimulate lively interest and global conversation among thoughtful Christians from all traditions.

A kind attempt
Revisado: 12-09-22
If you’re already generally familiar with progressive Christianity you’ll likely hear its drumbeat in the words of this book. The text is gracious for sure to what progressives have embraced for decades but seems to be a revelation to the author as his journey through Christianity unfolded. While he does a correct job of defining the literal meaning of orthodoxy his conclusions don’t stray too far from the modern picture of a genteel God whose definition of love is affection and tenderness without delving into other attributes of God’s holiness. Or the expectation that God’s people strive for a holiness beyond doing good deeds for others. There were some wonderful insights to the differences and qualities (and some shortcomings) amongst the varied Christian denominations. The title’s use of the word orthodoxy is a bit of a click bate in that it didn’t really offer a praxis of orthodoxy beyond what progressives already believe. There appears to be in this group of thinkers an unwillingness to say “no” to modern sentiments about morality and still think orthodoxy can exist in disobedient people.

I am a big Lewis fan. Along with affirming those traditions about Lewis that we happily receive there were some new insights to his writings and relationships. I also recommend the biography by Alistair McGrath.

The First World War laid waste to a continent and brought about the end of innocence — and the end of faith. Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, however, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis found that the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination.

Opens up the Inkling mindset
Revisado: 12-04-20
For those of us very familiar with Lewis’ and Tolkien’s writings as well as the history of the Great Wars this commentary brings the worlds together. My only critique is pronunciations by the reader. Magdalene College, Christendom, and Tolkien are consistently pronounced incorrectly. Great read!
