Good story, terrible narration
Revisado: 02-27-24
I honestly could not finish this audible. I tried to get through the narration, but I couldn't do it. The story is promising, so I'll get the book and read it. The narration is bland and monotone. No differences in character voices and no emphasis on areas that are intense.

Holy yes

This was a great audible! The reviews had me concerned for a while because the ending leaves on a cliff hanger. To which it absolutely does, but fear not! There is a second book. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. A child taken from her mother to be trained into an assassin, married off to an enemy king, falls in love, can't betray him, ends up betraying him accidently. It's a totally classic story, but has such an amazing flow and pulls the listener in for more. I was immediately hooked, and couldn't get enough of it. Performance for me, lacked a bit. James Patrick Cronin has a lovely toned voice, but he was lacking a bit in enthusiasm. I kept expecting something less than monotone, but rarely heard anything less. Lauren held the story with her narration. Great audible, would definitely recommend this.

Good read
Revisado: 12-13-20
The reviews definitely did not make me want to read this story. But I decided to try it out anyways. I actually liked it, there were some twists and turns that I didn't see coming-but a lot I could foresee. It was overall a pretty decent read. The beginning started out pretty slow, it took me a while to get into it. But once I made it through the character development, it became worth it. 4/5 recommendation

Historia
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

Don't listen to bad reviews
Revisado: 11-26-20
I actually really enjoyed this story. The negative comments almost deterred me from reading this. Yes, there's betrayal. Yes, there's sadness and near torture. But the author does a great job of making you understand reasoning. It's hard to justify any kind of entrapment or injustice. But I think this was a well written story. There were steamy parts, sad parts, giggly parts, angry parts, etc. There was an equal balance of emotion throughout the book. It starts out a bit rough, took me a bit to get into it. But it was overall a really good read. Was pretty predictable almost immediately, but I read a lot of novels like this and it's hard not to get surprised or figure it out fast. Don't let the bad reviews deter you unless you seriously get upset over violence, torture, or BDSM. It's a fantasy romance, this is typical.

5 stars all around!
Revisado: 11-23-20
I read this book before I bought the audible. I loved this book so much I had to get the audible version and have it read to me. Sarah Lyons Fleming is easily my favorite author. Hands down, this book is incredible. The narration is awesome, I got to the point where I memorized the voices and knew which character was coming up. Wonderfully written story, wonderfully narrated, and 10/10 would recommend anything written by this author. Can't wait for book 2 to come out (in the mean time, I'm going to re-read the other series...or have audible read them to me).
