Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

An unbelievable talent!
Revisado: 10-30-23
How can one human being have so much talent? Abraham Varghese is an individual who can do it all. Covenant of Water is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I now must order a hard copy so I can go back and feast my eyes on his words. How can a person who is a physician and such a talented writer also be able to narrate his book with such quiet passion, humor and ability to distinguish between characters? I am stunned by his talent. This is a must listen!! I cannot think of even the smallest criticism.

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

I’m so glad I listened
Revisado: 08-10-23
I feel sure this book will be one I will go back to. The depth of research it must have taken to have written this marvelous book is mind boggling and I feel fortunate to have been able to reap the benefits. The information about this incredible man, his family and peers who were our founding fathers made me feel like I had stepped into that time. Mr Chernow was able to describe the personalities of these men and women with such detail and depth I found myself thinking about them, their decisions and behavior even when not listening. Can’t wait to read more!

This one drove me crazy!
Revisado: 07-10-23
I’ve read many of Catherine R Hyde’s books and have enjoyed them and this story was good. The book is worth reading for the story. If you’ve not read any or very many of her books then you might not be bothered, but this is consistent in all of them. Her dialogue in most her books started bothering me, but this one drive me up a wall! Her use of “Oh” and “I don’t know what that means “ is so overdone, so constant and over used that I wanted to throw the book down. Maybe it’s just me, but if it’s necessary to explain the meaning of phrases to a child then after a while the adult character should figure out to use simpler terminology. If every time something is explained, the reaction is “Oh” then the author maybe should start tuning into real conversations. “Oh, wow!” “Oh, no”, “Really?”, “OK” are just a few alternative responses rather than “Oh”I’m not sure if I can read another of her books even though I think she touches on some great life lessons. I really hope someone let’s her know that the aforementioned dialogue issues are freaking annoying!

Beautiful story
Revisado: 02-16-23
Although her characters can be rough and cruel sometimes, this story is sincerely written with some of the loveliest prose I’ve read in quite a while. Her descriptions of the Irish landscape had me dreaming of a sweet cottage and wonderfully nosy Irish neighbors. I’m definitely a fan of Tara French!

Wonderful story about the displaced people of WWII
Revisado: 08-24-22
I had know idea about the DP camps of WWII. I learned so much from this beautifully written novel. It is no wonder why this generation is called “the greatest “.
Initially, I was put off by the narrator’s manner of reading. It seemed flat and without much inflection, but as I got into the story and heard her ability to use her voice to distinguish between characters, I grew to appreciate her style.
