Historia
One of the most fascinating developments of our time is that human qualities we have understood in terms of virtue — experiences we've called spiritual — are now being taken seriously by science as intelligence — as elements of human wholeness. Dacher Keltner and his Greater Good Science Center at Berkeley have been pivotal in this emergence. From the earliest years of his career, he investigated how emotions are coded in the muscles of our faces, and how they serve as “moral sensory systems." He was called on as Emojis evolved; he consulted on Pete Docter's groundbreaking movie Inside...

Mind expanding dialogue
Revisado: 02-04-23
Krista Tippett’s dialogue with scientist, Dacher Keltner, is so thought provoking and validating of intuitive experiences with awe. This one is worth more than a single listen. Have added his new book on Awe to my reading queue.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Story sticks with you
Revisado: 05-01-21
Beautifully narrated. Dark dystopian story that makes one ponder how you’d react in a similar situation (society falling apart.) The main character is both vulnerable and wise. Very thought-provoking interpretation of spirituality and religion, and fascinating depiction those with an empathic nature. I have a feeling this story will be on my mind for a long time.

Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

The kind of story that sticks with you.
Revisado: 03-21-21
Kristin Hannah really brings to life the day to day struggles of an ordinary family during the Great Depression. The main character grapples with the inner struggles of finding one’s voice and using it for good, while also trying to protect her children. It’s the kind of story that sticks with you. Beautifully narrated too.

I love this book and the insights that are so clearly expressed in the dialogue. It shows us how interconnected we all are, and the universality of our various belief systems & ideologies. Highly recommend!

Historia
The America we know today is so different in its fundamental views about almost every aspect of life as to be unrecognizable to our countrymen of two centuries ago. On issues as divergent as slavery, women's rights, education, the environment, and many others, we are simply no longer the country we were. What is the source of not only these changes, but of our distinctly American way of experiencing ourselves-confident in our value as individuals, certain of our ability to discover truths, self-reliant in the face of uncertainty and change?

Amazing lectures on the profound thinkers of the Transcendentalist movement. I'm so enriched by the experience of listening to them, and would highly recommend to anyone with an appreciation of nature, humanism, and the ideas that have shaped the American spirit.
