This is a compelling, gritty story, the second in a series about DI Jack Lennon. You won’t be disappointed if you enjoy noir. A great listen.

Stephen Bryan, a gay academic, is found brutally murdered in his bathroom. Will Grayson and Helen Walker, police detectives investigating the case, at first assume that his death is the result of an ill-judged sexual encounter. But doubts are soon raised. Not a great intro to John Harvey

This book is slow and tedious in places. I love John Harvey’s Charlie Resnick’s series. Start there for the best of John Harvey.

Historia
Rain slicked streets, riots, murder, chaos. It’s July 1992 and the Troubles in Northern Ireland are still grinding on after twenty-five apocalyptic years. Detective Inspector Sean Duffy got his family safely over the water to Scotland, to “Shortbread Land”. Duffy’s a part-timer now, only returning to Belfast six days a month to get his pension. It’s an easy gig, if he can keep his head down.

Wonderful to be reunited with Sean Duffy
Revisado: 03-15-25
So very glad for another Sean Duffy novel. It’s like sitting down with an old friend. An old very funny, very cultured, very profane and very, in spite of himself, winsome friend. Thank you Adrian McKinty.

Not my favorite Henry Porter
Revisado: 02-09-25
I love Henry Porter’s spy fiction. His Paul Samson series is one of the best ever, and I was thrilled to see he had published a new book. The Enigma Girl was a big disappointment. I can’t say I ever warmed up to the main character and nor did I appreciate the lesbian love affairs. The plotting of course is very good but in this one the connection was never made with the main character. Read the Paul Samson series if you want the best introduction to his wonderful writing.

Great plot light on character

A well plotted novel with some great twists and turns. Yet not entirely engaging because the author has not really made you care for the main character.

Romance detective fiction
Revisado: 11-10-24
This is a pretty silly book—part romance novel, part detective fiction. There are many implausibilities in both the romance and the crime. Lots of sex too. If you want a very light read, maybe you will like this.

Requires PATIENCE
Revisado: 08-23-24
This book is exasperatingly long. It could have been cut by a hundred or more pages and lost nothing. I wanted to bail out several times but persisted because one reviewer promised a great ending. It was fine but not sure it was worth the wait.

Great sweep of 20th century German history
Revisado: 07-08-24
Interesting story of two brothers and their different experiences of the two world wars. Deighton’s work is always well researched. I found the characterization of the younger brother Paulie wanting however. All of his Nazi, Gestapo, SS activities seem to have no moral effect on him. This is simply not credible. And please, Audible, leave some space between the book’s end and other notes. It really spoils the ending when the narrator hardly takes a breath at the end to go on with authors’ notes etc.

Historia
After the violence of Kristallnacht (1938), European Jews, now desperate to emigrate, found the consular doors of the world closed to them. Only one port required no entry visa: Shanghai, a self-governing Western trading enclave in what was technically Chinese territory, a political anomaly that became an escape hatch—if you were lucky enough to afford a ticket on one of the great Lloyd liners sailing to the East and safety.

A very different story of Jewish refugees
Revisado: 06-29-24
A fascinating and very different view of Jewish refugees washed up on the shores of Shanghai as World War II is circling. The decadence of Shanghai like a microcosm of the world. Kanon creates a menacing and brooding atmosphere and characters that are sympathetic as they are flawed and broken. A moving book.
