It’s like listening to great advice from you favorite aunt
Revisado: 10-31-24
I had no idea who Ina Garten was before listening to her memoir but after listening to this, I have such a deep respect and appreciation for her determination, wit, creativity, and courage. I hope to seize the opportunities in life with the willingness, excitement, and desire that Ina had with every new possibility she encountered.

Exquisitely told and urgently resonant, Even After Everything is a love letter to anyone who has opened their heart only to be hurt. Stephanie Duncan Smith proposes that it’s not through grit or forced resilience that you will find a way forward, but through receiving the full spectrum of our lives, just as we receive the empathy of God-with-us in every moment.

10/10 will read again!
Revisado: 10-30-24
I bought this book without doing any research on the contents. I follow Stephanie on Substack and felt confident that whatever story she was telling was going to be well worth my time to read, and I wasn’t wrong. I myself am going through some tough uncertain circumstances and found a lot of comfort in the connections, traditions, and experiences Smith recalls when looking back at her journey. It’s reminded me to keep my faith and my heart open to evolving in the most unexpected moments. It’s given me inspiration for traditions that I would love to put in place in my own life, it’s encouraged me to have conversations with others close to me who I know are struggling in different circumstances but still struggling nonetheless, it’s kept me honest with my own hopes for the future, pushing back the temptation to make my world small so I’ll endure less risks of getting hurt. 10/10 will read again!

Historia
We congratulate ourselves when we resist the donut in the office breakroom. We celebrate our restraint when we hold back from sending an email in anger. We feel virtuous when we wake up at dawn to get a jump on the day. We put others’ needs ahead of our own and believe this makes us exemplary. In On Our Best Behavior, journalist Elise Loehnen explains that these impulses—often lauded as unselfish, distinctly feminine instincts—are actually ingrained in us by a culture that reaps the benefits, via an extraordinarily effective collection of mores known as the Seven Deadly Sins.

Everyone needs to read this ✨
Revisado: 01-09-24
I’ll admit, I bought this book because I was in awe of the cover art. My expectations were low because I didn’t know what to expect. This book will easily be on the top 3 books I’ll read in 2024 and I feel so thankful I happened to read it while I am in the midst of looking at my life values to decide how I want to show up in the world as I prepare to become engaged and start planning a family at the same time I’m preparing to expand in my career.
This book put words to so many feelings I’ve been filtering through and unsure how to approach with myself or any other human being. It helped me understand my own trauma and how that has led to me short circuiting my own pleasure as its always feels tainted and I’ve always felt responsible for the situation that unfolded. I now have words to help me move forward from that and express my need to heal that part of myself.
My absolute favorite part of this book is when Elise opens up about her experience with grief when she lost her BIL. It hit so close to home for me as I too lost my young BIL who I was close with and spent just as much time with him as I did with my sister. I don’t often hear families speak of their in-laws as people they feel close to, more so that they feel obligated to them. When David passed I didn’t know how to express that losing him was losing a brother because many people around me do not consider in-laws as close. Knowing there is anyone else out there who understands how tragic it felt helped me feel so validated in my grief.

Historia
Before she was a trauma cleaner, Sandra Pankhurst was many things: husband and father, drag queen, gender reassignment patient, sex worker, small businesswoman, trophy wife... but as a little boy, raised in violence and excluded from the family home, she just wanted to belong. Now she believes her clients deserve no less. A man who bled quietly to death in his living room. Sarah Krasnostein has watched the extraordinary Sandra Pankhurst bring order and care to these, the living and the dead - and the book she has written is equally extraordinary.

Revisado: 04-21-23
This is hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read, and for context, I’ve read a lot of books.
I wasn’t expecting the beautiful, encouraging, yet heart wrenching story that unfolded. They way the author is able to describe a foul smell many of the world will never know, took my breath away.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about this book. I’ll definitely be reading it again, taking about it a lot, and thinking of it often.
