Excellent !! As thrilling as any suspense novel, but real life. Outstanding writing and narration. I'm not a golfer and don't have a great deal of interest in the game of golf, but I like general nonfiction so I bought bought this in an Audible sale. Vardon and Ouimet predate Bobby Jones, whose biography I read several years ago. I heartily recommend this book especially if you get an audiobook.

Wow, I don't even know where to start. First off, this is not for the faint of heart; I read a lot of crime/noir/hardboiled books and this book made me gag in a few places. Second off this is an unforgettable book. The main character is a psychopath and recognizes that he is one. He has no empathy and thinks only of himself and how he can manipulate others to further his ambitions. Is he redeemed at the end of the book? That's for you to decide. The narrator is superb (maybe that's why I gagged 😏).

Extremely slow start; searching for the story

This book is EXTREMELY slow to start as though the author was searching for the story. I almost quit several times, but finally the last third of the book brought it all together. I can't say it was worth the credit and I'm not likely to buy another Junior Bender unless it is seriously discounted.

Somewhat convoluted, but well constructed story. Major characters are well-drawn as are some of the secondary characters. I'll be going back to read or listen to the first three in the series. The author does a nice job reading his own book.

3.5 rounded to 4

A sometimes amusing, sometimes gory thriller/mystery. The lead character (attached to the FBI and nicknamed "Steps") has an unusual attribute that helps him solve crimes along with his FBI buddy, Jimmy. The concept is different, the characters nicely drawn and I look forward to seeing (or hearing) more of this author's work. The narrator was fine though not exceptional.

Excellent and well worth your attention. In 1889 a private dam broke because of poor construction and heavy spring rains. Around 2,200 people were killed and several towns were wiped completely off the map. Plus ça change. . . Journalists wrote of riots (which did not occur) and "hunkies" (Hungarian workers brought in by the rich mill owners so they could pay lower wages) were accused of not helping in the aftermath of the destruction (entirely untrue according to the townspeople). The flood occupied newspapers for weeks and help poured in to the tune of two million dollars (remember that this is in 1889 - a vast sum of money). The book is detailed but is not bogged down by detail. The narrator was excellent.

A totally implausible premise but a rollicking rollercoaster ride of a book with a woman saving the day time after time. No character building or literary motifs but a fun listen with action scenes scrolling inside your eyes. Could make an exciting movie. Narrator did a nice job.

A wonderful book I won't forget quickly. Very dense and dark story with extremely memorable characters. The backstory of the characters is revealed bit-by-bit so the tension is kept very high. The narrator had distinct voices for each of the characters and when the killer was revealed (strictly by the particular voice the narrator used) I reared back in my chair with astonishment and dismay. Highly recommended.

What I know about golf would fit comfortably in a demitasse spoon but I loved this book. With a few online searches I was able to get definitions of some of the terms and an overview of the Cypress Point golf course (which is gorgeous!). Thank you Audible for the sale, otherwise I would have never considered this book.

The course, the match-up between the characters and the description of the holes and the architects who built it were wonderfully described and masterly narrated. A truly heartwarming story of legendary men.

Very good, gritty noir-ish story set in the 1950s. Joe McCarthy, Clyde Tolsen and J Edgar play roles in the novel. The narrator was perfect casting and did a superior job. A fine listen!
