Historia
The Courage to Be Disliked, already an enormous best seller in Asia with more than 3.5 million copies sold, demonstrates how to unlock the power within yourself to be the person you truly want to be. Using the theories of Alfred Adler, one of the three giants of 20th-century psychology, The Courage to Be Disliked follows an illuminating conversation between a philosopher and a young man. The philosopher explains to his pupil how each of us is able to determine our own life, free from the shackles of past experiences, doubts, and the expectations of others.

Historia
In the 18th century, India's share of the world economy was as large as Europe's. By 1947, after two centuries of British rule, it had decreased six-fold. Beyond conquest and deception, the Empire blew rebels from cannons, massacred unarmed protesters, entrenched institutionalized racism, and caused millions to die from starvation. British imperialism justified itself as enlightened despotism for the benefit of the governed, but Shashi Tharoor takes on and demolishes this position, demonstrating how every supposed imperial "gift" was designed in Britain's interests alone.

This Title is Abridge
Revisado: 09-14-22
I was really angry that the audible left off all the subtitles!!! The Chapter titles are read but the subtitles between sections are not included. Made it less comprehensible. I had this in my library for a while. I bought it because I was very interested in what the BRITISH EAST INDIA COMPANY did to India. I could not finish the book. I bought the Kindle and realized that the author failed to read any of the subtitles in the chapter. These subtitles set up what he is fixing to say in that section and so makes the chapters feel incomprehensible.
Since the author read his own book, this feels purposefully. This book should be labeled Abridged.
Chapter 1: The Looting of India
The Conquest of India by a Corporation
The Deindustrialization of India: Taxation, Corruption and the Nabobs
Extraction, Taxation and Diamonds
Revenue Collection and the Drain of Resources
The Destruction of Shipping and Ship Building
Sealing From India Steel
Chapter 2 Did British Give India Political Unity?
The Destruction of Political Institutions
The Crown Takes Over Its Jewel
The Un-Indian Civil Service
Indians in Imperial Service
Imperial Racisms: Only Disconnect
British Governance, the Swadeshi Movement and the Absent of Mahtma Gandi
The Great War and the Great Betrayal
Chapter 3 Democracy, The Press, The Parlimentary
System and the Rule of Law
The (Partly) Free Press
The Parliamentary System in India
'Rule of Law' : The Boot and the Spleen
Non-Interference or Manipulation?
Chapter 4 Divide Et Impera
Caste, Race and Classification
The British Puditocracy
How the Census Undermined Consensus
The Hindu-Muslim Divide
A Saint Among Sinners (Mahatma Gandhi)
Stumbling Towards Armageddon
Endgame: Election, Revolt, Division
Two Surrenders: The British Give Up and the Congress Gives In
Quitting India, Creating Pakistan
Chapter 5 The Myth of Enlightened Despotism
Feast and Famine: The British and 'Starving India'
Forced Migration: Transportation and Indentured Labour
The Brutish Raj
The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
Chapter 6: The Remaining Case for Empire
Education and the English Language
Textual Harassment - rewriting India's history
Tea Without Sympathy
The Indian Game of Cricket
Chapter 7 The (IM) Balance Sheet
A Coda -
Imperial pretensions, Colonial Consequences
The Moral Barrier
Chapter 8 The Messy Afterlife of Colonialism
Imperial Amnesia
Returning the Jewel in the Crown
Resisting Colonialism: The appeal of Gandhism
Cast a Long Shadow: The Residual Problem of Colonialism
If the subtitles were included in this audible then I would give it a 3. And the reason for this is that it is confusing when you keep saying Britain when it is really the East India Company and the interest of the Crown..

Almost didn't finish
Revisado: 08-19-22
The issue with this book is it is nearly traumatizing with all it's dark stories. He didn't need to fill this book up with a ton of stories we see it on the news everyday. it would have been better to focus on solutions. seemed that most of his solutions involved somebody. I had to work hard to make it applicable for a person that doesn't or is not able to go out or pay for bio feedback. So it was interesting but could be better.

And those that play must play according to the rules. I read this because it is alluded to in the allegory The Catcher In The Rye by J. D. Salinger. I believe this is alluded to both in the vehicle that DB drives and Holden talking to his history teacher Mr Spencer. I also think the black panther is a very interesting illusion... mentioned in James Joyce Ulysses.
The narrator was both informative and excellent performance! Thank you!

Really good. Reader was excellent.
Revisado: 08-20-20
Enjoyed this book. Very timely during Covid19 scare. I say scare because it doesn't come close to being a pandemic like the one in this book. It seems the actors and news media wanted us to believe it was the End. But they are just trying to create social engineering. For you next listen I would recommend Bambi:A Life In The Woods By Felix Salten read by this Narrator. Be sure and read the Wiki description and you will see that Bambi had too much adult content for Disney. and for Hitler, who banned it. And while you are reading it think about NYC. Exodus movement of the people!

The Third Law is Make It Easy
Revisado: 12-05-18
Unfortunately this book comes with notes that are not easy to access. I have tried repeatedly to get to the links stated in this audible and nothing comes up to indicate that link exist. Other audible books have a pdf in the library. This makes it easy to see the grafts or review notes. Even if a pdf had links in it that were active to the pages referred to this would make it easier, provided I was on line. But this "go to www.atomichabit/(_)"is not helpful. I think the material is good.

I really enjoyed this audible!
Revisado: 12-01-18
I really enjoyed listening to the observations that Jennifer made of these two french families and French life i general. i have never been to France but know people that have. It became clear to me that the values that my friends adopted were Parisian.
Also i loved the reader! She sounded like someone from Southern California. She acted in a way that reflected what i would have expected the author to be like!
If you want to live life with high standards rather than just a high cost of living this book will elevate you!
Thank you Jenifer! You feel like a friend!

power to the people. ..power to the dog.
Revisado: 11-29-17
We hear so much about power to the people. But can you take a dog and give him power and responsibly?
I think this is a satire on giving power to someome which they haven't the natural ability to handle. Once they have it what do they do with it? Read the Heart of the Dog and find out. Them read your newspaper and think about our educational system. Maybe one day we will understand how important the family is in making responsible people rather than systems or industries.
