Historia
Pulled out of (forced) retirement by his old protégé, Peter Guillam, George Smiley must determine who among the high command at the British Secret Intelligence Service is in fact a Soviet spy—one who’s been climbing their way up the ranks for decades. The stakes are high: the mole is behind more than one failed operation and has lain waste to some of their best informant networks.

A 20th Century Masterpiece
Revisado: 04-16-25
A brilliant and beautiful Cold War novel, filled with very different and very human characters drawn into the 'secret world' of British and Soviet-block intelligence work. LeCarre understood sacrifice, loyalty and courage along with ego, seduction and deceit on both sides of the Iron Curtain. And that even when there is a reckoning day for the traitor, exhaustion and grief follows.
Read wonderfully by Simon Vance.

Historia
Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, is living out his old age on the family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London, and involved such characters as Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, George Smiley, and Peter Guillam himself, are to be scrutinized by a generation with no memory of the Cold War.

Masterful novel
Revisado: 03-11-25
This novel is among his absolute best-- if only Le Carre was still with us to write more. Old Circus spies and the Cold War are brought to life via Peter Guillam and the lawyers who try to pin him down for past deeds. Those deeds and their very complex stories are described by different characters and their evolving (or devolving) perspectives. It's brilliant and I wish it hadn't ended.

Historia
Entertaining and different, this is an enjoyable study of a flawed yet characterful Prince of Wales seen through the eyes of the women in his life. Edward Vll, who gave his name to the Edwardian Age and died in 1911, was King of England for the final 10 years of his life. He was 59 when at last he came to the throne. Known as Bertie, the eldest son of Victoria and Albert, he was bullied by both his parents.

Heavy on gossip & mistresses
Revisado: 03-05-25
Well written and read, regarding an interesting and important monarch, but should have been edited to summarize the influence of some mistresses, rather than sound like a series of gossip columns. These stories were overlong and tedious. Bertie's childhood story and awful interventions of his parents (documented by contemporary letters) was very enlightening, and ditto the later intrusions of Victoria into his life and family. There is much to learn about his life, including his success in foreign relations, which alas was overshadowed by pages and pages of his mistress' tittle tattle and petty gamesmanship.

Nicholas Ralph - super talented reader, conveying every personality with sincerity, charm and humor. His mastery of accents is so convincing that you forget the same reader is acting out a dialogue. He seems to have James Herriot in his soul. The writing of course is beautiful.

Historia
All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants - both two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine as we laugh, cry, and delight in the portraits of his many varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

Another outstanding performance for this series pt2
Revisado: 04-21-24
Nicholas Ralph (as with the 1st) makes this terrific story come to life with his ability to do accents and personalities perfectly for each character, while capturing the comical and sad moments so memorably. This is the 2nd book in the series and I am once again regret that's it's over- and still laughing over the Tristan story, where he fakes long agony while delivering a calf and is given sympathy, tea and brandy by its tough old owner.
A really great listen.

Historia
The three novels that make up The Forsyte Saga chronicle the ebbing social power of the commercial upper-middle class Forsyte family through three generations, beginning in Victorian London during the 1880s and ending in the early 1920s. Galsworthy's masterly narrative examines not only their fortunes but also the wider developments within society, particularly the changing position of women.

Truly Fine Literature
Revisado: 04-15-24
Far deeper and more important than the TV series (which drew me to the book), Galsworthy weaves a complex series of stories and biographies of 3 family generations through crucial events in English history, from the Industrial Revolution (which brings the working class progenitor up into wealth) through the Boer War, death of Queen Victoria and the careless post-WWI generation, linking the family at last and unexpectedly to titled, landed gentry. Galsworthy is poetic, insightful, ahead of his time regarding men and women's roles, and shows us how social defiance liberates, frustrates, and brings happiness and tragedy to his characters. But unlike the series this book shows how the characters age, adapt or don't, cling to the family 'property- first' ethic, or never embrace it. The thoughts of his main characters (whether irascible or admirable) near the end of life are the most beautifully written of all.

Really enjoyed this actress reading this Austen book that I've read several times before. She subtly captures the insinuating character of Mary Crawford, and made me laugh when doing Mrs. Norris and Mr. Price. A great pleasure to listen to, and sorry it's over!

Historia
England in the 1520s is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of 20 years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe opposes him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. But Henry is volatile: one day tender, one day murderous. Cromwell helps him break the opposition, but what will be the price of his triumph?

Brilliant read of a brilliant book.
Revisado: 02-03-24
This is my second listen to Wolf Hall, this time with Ben Miles reading. (I should say that the first reader was also excellent.)
But after hearing Ben Miles read #3 The Mirror and the Light, I purchased his versions of the first two books and am so glad I did. His tone, accents, and personality are transformed for each character (and there are many), not brashly but subtly until after awhile you could swear it's a radio play with multiple actors.
Part fictional blast from the past, and part history lesson for serious students of the Tudor era, it's a brilliant book weaving daily life details with major events that changed the course of the world. RIP Thomas Cromwell,

Historia
Hardy's first major literary success, here brought to life by narrator Nathaniel Parker, is the story of the independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm, the largest estate in the area. She surprises the villagers of Weatherbury by deciding to run it herself. Attracted to this bold young woman are three suitors all vying for her affections. They include the lonely gentleman-farmer Boldwood, the young and handsome but inconsiderate Sergeant Troy and the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak.

Classic novel, classic actor
Revisado: 08-19-23
I read the book decades ago, hoping this audio experience would be good. And it was beyond good, in fact it just doesn't get any better than this. Mr. Parker, a very fine actor, reads it as if he is Thomas Hardy reincarnated, his story and characters shared with a depth that increases over time. Give yourself quiet space for the last chapters. The title will reveal itself. It's on my re-listen list.

Historia
John Gaunt was the son of Edward III, brother to the Black Prince, father to Henry IV, and the sire of all those Tudors. He has had pretty bad press: supposed usurper of Richard II’s crown and the focus of hatred in the Peasants’ Revolt, as they torched his home, the Savoy Palace. Helen Carr paints a complex portrait of a man who held the levers of power on the English and European stage, passionately upheld chivalric values, pressed for the Bible to be translated into English, and patronized the arts.

Thesis Rough Draft? - not a professional work
Revisado: 06-29-23
How did this book get published in its present state?.
The writing is juvenile and lacks professional or even basic editing.
'However . . . however . . . however . . . however . . . ' is how the author moves from one event to another, and (no exaggeration) this word is repeated continually through the entire book, sometimes within the same paragraph. Other patterns and words are also repeated, turning the story into a series of awkward stumbling blocks.
I read nonfiction history all the time, mostly British Medieval. So based on reviews, I got this book thinking it was well written and that I'd learn something profound and new about John of Gaunt. But no, it's a dull rehash of what's easily available elsewhere. Most surprising is the watered down description of Edward the Black Prince, a controversial military leader known for his brutality towards civilians.
Last but not least, the author reads the book herself, sounding like a bored 16-year-old trying to hold back a yawn. Almost all of the book is read in a flat monotone, with some improvement in the last chapter. Surely a writer who makes it this far can get some voice training before these reads?
For now, John of Gaunt's extraordinary life story is wasted here, what a great pity.
