Historia
A century before Britain became involved in this terrible business, whole villages and towns in European countries were being depopulated by slavers, who transported the men, women, and children to Africa, where they were sold. This is the forgotten slave trade, one which saw over a million Christians forced into captivity in the Muslim world. Starting in the ancient world, Simon Webb traces the history of slavery in Europe, showing that the numbers involved were vast and that the victims were often treated far more cruelly than black slaves in America and the Caribbean.

Great information.

The book was well written, and enjoyable. Learned many new things about the slave trade. At 6 hours it was a quick one to listen to.

Meandering story
Revisado: 09-05-24
Narrator was great, story wasn’t. Interesting stories thrown in but the book was all over the place. It started strong with founders needing to create new ideas and not following the herd, and then proceeded to go down typical liberal talking points and weird tangents for the rest of the book (green energy, protecting the planet, poor Bill Gates, anti-Ayn Rand, etc).
He has a small number of interesting ideas, but for a guy trying to preach novel thinking, he didn’t set a good example. It’s short though, so if you are curious or like hearing random stories on familiar brands…I’d still pick something else.

Historia
Peter Turchin, one of the most interesting social scientists of our age, has infused the study of history with approaches and insights from other fields for more than a quarter century. End Times is the culmination of his work to understand what causes political communities to cohere and what causes them to fall apart, as applied to the current turmoil within the United States.

Interesting theory
Revisado: 10-07-23
The writers theory may have merit, but I find his ideas on economics and why the USA has a lot of wealth inequality to be lacking. If you have a free-market or Austrian view of economics you may struggle to get through parts of this book.

Historia
There is a chapter of World War II history that remains largely untold: the story of the fourth largest Allied military of the war, and the only nation to have fought in the battles of Leningrad, Arnhem, Tobruk, and Normandy. This is the story of the Polish forces during the Second World War, the story of millions of young men and women who gave everything for freedom and in the final victory lost all. In a cruel twist of history, the monumental struggles of an entire nation have been largely forgotten, and even intentionally obscured. No Greater Ally redresses the balance,

An ok book
Revisado: 06-17-20
The book was ok, it covered Simons like you would expect but the last third got political and really disappointed. If I had known that before getting it I would have skipped it.

Historia
T. R. Fehrenbach brilliantly delineates the contrasts and conflicts between the many Mexicos, unraveling the history while weaving a fascinating tapestry of beauty and brutality: the Amerindians, who wrought from the vulnerable land a great indigenous Meso-American civilization by the first millennium BC; the successive reigns of Olmec, Maya, Toltec, and Mexic masters, who ruled through an admirably efficient bureaucracy and the power of the priests, propitiating the capricious gods with human sacrifices; the Spanish conquistadors, and much more.

I liked the book, lots of history. It is a bit dated now since the last up date was in 1995.
