Zeitgeist of when Europe convulsed into madness

An interesting and unique look at Europe as it headed into WWI, and some of the consequences. Although indebted to Tuchman's The Proud Tower, Rites of Spring has its own story to tell and stands alone. Both books are a great addition for anyone interested in the First World War.

What a complicated history, with all those petty German states/provinces, but, well told by Ms. Wedgwood. The war was more than just about religion, it was about power, or preventing any one entity from becoming too powerful, hence all the shifts in alliance. Charlton Griffin is a classic as well.

The author starts by relating the bland History education he received in school, British and American centric. He was enamored by the mysterious lands and peoples east of Europe, in Central Asia, along the Silk Road. This book is his attempt to rectify that. I got as far as the Crusades and stopped. Each chapter is basically a historical vignette, looking from the West: Alexander, Rome, Christianization, Islam, Rus, Crusades... He hardly got past the Euphrates. All lands in the Stan countries and beyond he was so interested in his youth go unmentioned. I was hoping for something new, but Silk Roads is just rehashed European history.

Starting this, I was skeptical that a story of a boat lost at sea could be sustained with interest. By the end I had been through the storm. The story just got better and better. Narrator reads as if he had been there.

Each le Carre book is given a standout performance. A great complement to the books or movies, the best of what radio drama can be.

What a great and fun performance. Wonderful way to experience a science fiction classic that in its day was pushing the boundaries of the possible, but which technology has now rendered quaint.

This is Mancuso's weakest effort. Too much about his research, much of which is simply pie in the sky. His The Incredible Journey of Plants was excellent, and Brilliant Green was interesting. He should return to doing what he's done best, writing about the impersonal plant world.

Five stars for California's four trees

First saw this book in a bookstore in California. Flipped to the second part on eucalyptus, read the first couple pages and let out a gut laugh. Knew I had to get the audiobook, listened while driving through California visiting its trees. Interesting history on four trees that define California: Redwood, Eucalyptus, Citrus, and Palm. The author has a good sense of humor that the narrator brought through. Paradise is always good for a few laughs.
