Suspense
Revisado: 12-30-24
A story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Continuous action. Not for the faint of heart. Innocent young British lady vs evil Nazis. Takes place at start of WWII as Nazis invade Poland. Wholesomeness of prewar Poland probably a bit exaggerated—but it gets the point across. Well worth the listen!

Historia
Paul Haydn was on his way home at last, to New York and the civilian life he longed for after years of war. Yet he would never forget the tormented people, desperate for refuge in Berlin. They had survived the war—but now a new, sinister presence threatened them, their families, the whole of society. Now he discovered that, back home, some of his former colleagues had dangerous political sympathies, that someone was trying to discredit the woman he had once loved. The pattern seemed suddenly familiar. He began to realize why there was such interest in his counter-propaganda skills.

Great writer! From 1951 but many parallels with 2020’s. Excellent study in propaganda, persuasion and mind control. Grabs you and keeps you. Writer understood daily life with small kids.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Huck Finn reimagined.
Revisado: 11-22-24
Wonderful narration of a good story. Interesting approach—telling the Huck Finn story with a different narrator. The story is, at times, what my Mother would call “far fetched”. A read you can’t put down once you start it. Well worth your time.

Historia
Late October 1909, and the season of ghouls and things that go bump in the night has descended on the village of Littleton Cotterell. Lady Hardcastle and her trusted lady’s maid, Florence, find themselves hosting a colorful cast of actors whose spooky moving picture, The Witch’s Downfall, is being shown to mark Halloween. But things take a macabre turn when the first night’s screening ends with a mysterious murder, and the second night with another. One by one the actors turn up dead in ways that eerily echo their film.

Breathy narrator but enjoyable
Revisado: 03-13-24
My mother’s term, far fetched, described the plot well. The whispery, breathy narration bothered me although I have liked some of the other books the narrator did. But I still did enjoy the book and won’t give up on Lady Hardcastle and her further adventures.

Story a little silly but a fun listen. Charming characters. Quite short so a better buy with money than with a credit.

Historia
On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol in attempts to overturn the presidential election. It was a betrayal of our Constitution, and one of the darkest days in recent history. Yet to former congressman Adam Kinzinger it was also the culmination of a cultural and political rupture he’d long seen coming. Constructive criticism from within the Republican Party was no longer enough. It was time to stand up, even if it meant betraying his own party.

Excellent listen
Revisado: 11-17-23
People from both sides of the aisle will gain by listening to Renegade. Kinzinger describes the work of the Jan. 6 Committee from his perspective as a Republican motivated by a concern for truth. His autobiographical chapters stand against those who challenged his military service. Even those who oppose all Republican policies will find they will respect him and his attempts to always act in a moral way.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Gripping!
Revisado: 01-20-23
Excellent! Amazing research brings to life the passengers and their personal stories rather than emphasizing the geo-political forces surrounding the sinking of the Lusitania. The author transports you into that time period and onto the ship. Don’t start it until you have some uninterrupted time because once you start, you won’t be able to stop.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

What a fun book!
Revisado: 05-14-22
I don’t usually read science fiction but am glad I was talked into listening to this book. Grabbed me from chapter one on. Suspenseful. Surprisingly, it was also charming. I let a lot of the science float on by me—just paid enough attention to understand the movement of the story. It’s a great story. Well worth the cost.
