Really really wanted to like it. The story is so far reaching and the performances are "put on" and stiff.
I have never rolled my eyes so much while listening to a podcast or book.

Revisado: 02-05-16
Love the book. Wonderful narration performance by Khristine Hvam. I find myself constantly looking for new well written book similar to Gone Girl, the Silent Wife, the Secret History and this book definitely hit the spot. I couldn't stop listening to it and devoured it in a day.

Very Disappointing
Revisado: 01-03-14
The first two books in this series were so amazing and exciting, I couldn't wait to read this book.
It was a major disappointment. It feels as though it doesn't belong in the series, it just happens to have some of the same characters.
I think one reason why it is so strange is the style of the books changes. In the first two books the story is told from one perspective. In this book it changes to a dual narration. This sort of change doesn't work for a trilogy when the style has already been established.
It was a hard hard book to get through.
It didn't have the same intrigue and tension that the other two did.
Other reviews have said the book was depressing. I don't know if I agree with that. It's fine for a book to be dark especially these dystopian ones.
Its just boring.

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

A book that you can't stop thinking about once you've finished. If you liked Gone Girl or The Secret History, this would be a good one to add on to your list.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Read it
Revisado: 08-11-13
I loved the book, it's a very different spin on magic. The other reviews definitely have it right there.
I unfortunately did not like the narration. It took me 4 or 5 tries to start listening to the book because the narration could not bring me in. I think its rare to find a male narrator that can do female voices well. They always sound weak and annoying. Jim Dale, is an example of one who reads very well, and character voices do not bother me. I think a different narrator would have changed the whole experience in a better way.

Historia
In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. And yet, for Anya Balanchine, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant D.A.'s son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend.

Ridiculous Premise... but enjoyed it nonetheless
Revisado: 08-11-13
I actually purchased this book because I enjoy Ilyana Kadushin's narrations, and she didn't disappoint. She has a voice that is very easy to listen to and she brings you into the story flawlessly. I'd suggest purchasing anything she narrates.
Despite the fact that chocolate is a banned substance but beer is not...the characters are well rounded, the story is intriguing, it left me wanting more and I was happy to discover that it's a series. It's a very creative look at future of our world and it takes familiar things and twists them in a surprising way.

Divergent meets The Bachelor or ANTM
Revisado: 08-11-13
Fun interesting listen. HUGE cliff hanger at the end. The title of this review very much describes the book. If you liked Matched you'd like this book. It's a little "girlier" than Divergent or Hunger Games, but if you're a fan of the YA dystopian genre you'll enjoy the book.

Historia
Lia and Cassie were best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies. But now Cassie is dead. Lia's mother is busy saving other people's lives. Her father is away on business. Her stepmother is clueless. And the voice inside Lia's head keeps telling her to remain in control, stay strong, lose more, weigh less. If she keeps on going this way - thin, thinner, thinnest - maybe she'll disappear altogether.

Haunting
Revisado: 08-11-13
Laurie Halse Anderson is a phenomenal story teller. I read her book Speak in 1 day, one of her best. This story was intriguing, disturbing, and heartwarming.
The one thing I didn't like is how they audibly handled what I assume are cross outs in the written from of the book. There are beeps and odd volume adjustments. I think I'd rather hear a vocal change rather than an "editing" change. I think Jeannie Stith could have acted the "cross outs" without the annoying beeps. I personally don't like that directorial? choice. I'm curious to see how other audio productions handle that challenge

Historia
Lottie just knows that her boyfriend is going to propose during lunch at one of London’s fanciest restaurants. But when his big question involves a trip abroad, not a trip down the aisle, she’s completely crushed. So when Ben, an old flame, calls her out of the blue and reminds Lottie of their pact to get married if they were both still single at 30, she jumps at the chance. No formal dates - just a quick march to the altar and a honeymoon on Ikonos, the sun-drenched Greek island where they first met years ago. Their family and friends are horrified. Fliss, Lottie’s older sister, knows that Lottie can be impulsive - but surely this is her worst decision yet.
