Historia
It's true that Maria Konnikova had never actually played poker before and didn't even know the rules when she approached Erik Seidel, Poker Hall of Fame inductee and winner of tens of millions of dollars in earnings, and convinced him to be her mentor. But she knew her man: a famously thoughtful and broad-minded player, he was intrigued by her pitch that she wasn't interested in making money so much as learning about life.

High hopes but…
Revisado: 04-10-23
This book is a great example of why authors should rarely read their own work. I made myself stick with it because I hate to leave a book unfinished.

Historia
In a small fictional town on the Oregon coast there are love affairs and almost-love-affairs, mystery and hilarity, bears and tears, brawls and boats, a garrulous logger and a silent doctor, rain and pain, Irish immigrants and Salish stories, mud and laughter. There's a Department of Public Works that gives haircuts and counts insects, a policeman who is addicted to Puccini, a philosophizing crow, beer, and berries.

Need a plot
Revisado: 09-18-18
I like to read stories with strong plot lines. This book doesn’t have one. Its language is beautiful and the portraits the author draws are poetic, but I want a story, a strong narrative, and I didn’t find it.

Historia
For Gervase Phinn growing old is not about a leisurely walk to the pub for a game of dominoes or snoozing in his favourite armchair. As this sparkling collection of his very best humorous writing shows, he may be ‘out of the woods’ but he is certainly not ‘over the hill’.

Not as good as expected
Revisado: 02-12-18
I love the Dales series. This memoir doesn’t live up to those. The biggest difference for me was the lack of a narrative arc. The Dale books have a beginning, middle, and end. This feels like random stories collected under loose headings.
Also, not all of the stories felt like they were original to him. I have heard/read them elsewhere. I was surprised at that from him. What were his editors thinking?

Historia
Finding logical inconsistencies, factual errors, and doublespeak wherever he looks, Al Franken takes on and destroys the myth of liberal bias in the media, hoists the Bush White House on its own rhetorical petard, and punctures the mean-spirited sanctimony of such media darlings as Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly. Timely, provocative, unfailingly honest, and always uproarious, Lies is sure to raise hackles and spark hilarity inside the Beltway and from sea to shining sea.

Disappointed
Revisado: 10-23-17
I listened to this after listening to Franken’s latest “Al Franken Giant of the Senate,” which was funny and insightful. This was not. There were funny spots, but they were offset by some cringe-worthy places like the whole Bob Jones University section.

From the internationally acclaimed author of the Harry Hole novels—a fast, tight, darkly lyrical stand-alone novel that has at its center the perfectly sympathetic antihero: an Oslo contract killer who draws us into an unexpected meditation on death and love.

The narrator is terrible
Revisado: 09-19-15
Have to agree with other reviewers - the narration is awful! Could not finish listening and wish I had the hours I did spend on it back. Maybe I'll try it in print. But what I did get through (about 50%) was predictable and unoriginal. Surprising for Nesbo.
