Historia
Hildy Good is a townie. A lifelong resident of a small community on the rocky coast of Boston's North Shore, she knows pretty much everything about everyone. And she's good at lots of things, too. A successful real-estate broker, mother, and grandmother, her days are full. But her nights have become lonely ever since her daughters, convinced their mother was drinking too much, sent her off to rehab. Now she's in recovery—more or less.

Incredible narration!
Revisado: 05-15-20
I have finished over 200 audiobooks and I've abandoned many others and this is quite possibly the best narration of all of them. At first, I kept thinking that I would have read things on paper very differently than how they were inflected by the narrator and I kept just being tickled at what a great experience that perspective was. Then I settled in and just fell in love with Hildy as performed by Mary Beth Hurt. It was the kind of story that I enjoy anyway but even if it wasn't, if you appreciate audiobook performances, this is absolutely a must listen.

The morning of her niece's wedding, Margo Just drinks a double martini and contemplates the many mistakes she's made in her fifty-odd years of life. Spending three decades in love with a wonderful but unattainable man is pretty high up on her list of missteps, as is a long line of unsuccessful love affairs accompanied by a seemingly endless supply of delicious cocktails.

Thanks to audible for sharing this one. I really enjoyed this and ironically I feel like this would be a fantastic movie. Parts of the narration were a bit rough but the story overall was fantastic.

Historia
Lou Berney's The Long and Faraway Gone is a smart, fiercely compassionate crime story that explores the mysteries of memory and the impact of violence on survivors - and the lengths they will go to find the painful truth of the events that scarred their lives. In the summer of 1986, two tragedies rocked Oklahoma City. Six movie theater employees were killed in an armed robbery while one inexplicably survived. Then a teenage girl vanished from the annual state fair. Neither crime was ever solved.

Irritating narration
Revisado: 01-22-17
I chose this book for the character study from a victims point of view. I appreciated their desire for answers and ultimate acceptance that they would only ever know so much. There was a decent part of the female story line that was too far fetched. I debated skipping the female storyline because of that and the narrators millennial whine/vocal fry. I'm not sure if my issue was the storyline or the narration or both. Decent but I'll try to remember this narrators name and skip those offerings in audio.

Here at Audible, we know just how much of an impact a voice can have on a story - taking simple words and filling them with elation, wonderment, tragedy, or pure satisfaction. We rely on our narrators every day to bring our favorite stories and characters to life - to introduce us to new authors and genres, or even to a new (perhaps longer) commute. And though our narrators are the best story tellers in the business, it's usually someone else's that they're telling.

Historia
Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. The Fault in Our Stars is insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw. It brilliantly explores the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

A good narrator can negatively impact a story
Revisado: 03-22-13
I liked this book and listened to it quickly, understanding the hype but not loving it the way so many others have. My issue was actually with the narrator who I think would have been fabulous reading another book. Being born and raised in the area of Indianapolis where this story takes place, her slight accent and incorrect intonation of places really grated. This is miniscule, I understand, but the familiar setting was one of the things that really worked for me in this one and saying Broad Ripple correctly would have made it even better. It's the little things sometimes.

Multiple times, I've turned on my next listen and heaved a heavy sigh when I sadly realized that I wasn't listening to Guernica. The tragic story, the amazing love, the moving narration, it's all fabulous. I have no clue how I stumbled on this book but I'm so glad I did.

Historia
> The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and an icon for her generation, a 15-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip.

Good historical fiction
Revisado: 08-13-12
What does Elizabeth McGovern bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I had a hard time with her Kansas accent, wondering if that was accurate, which made me realize how few people I know from Kansas. But her voice was soothing and added character to the characters.
Any additional comments?
I can see why this is a popular summer read. It's easy to get behind the characters and become wrapped up in their world. It bothers me when modern values are given to characters in historical fiction but Cora's beliefs were based on her life events and it was easy to see how her great secrets would lead to her more progressive beliefs. I actually gasped out loud at one twist. Love that!

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Skip the afterword
Revisado: 01-26-12
Would you listen to 11-22-63 again? Why?
I loved listening to this and would consider listening again just to hear the narration again. However, if I revisit this book, it will more likely be the print version so I may experience that format as well.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is a 40 hour narration that I listened to in one week - and I work full time and have two small kids. I would have listened to it in one sitting if I could have.
Any additional comments?
I wish I would have skipped the afterword by the author. I wanted to let the ending resonate and King's thoughts brought my thoughts to a screeching halt. If I could do it again, I wouldn't have listened to that immediately after finishing the book.
