Was Leary because of the many negative remarks about Communism. Those critics seem to pass over the brutal conditions made worse by collusion of authorities with growers against workers. Police and company thugs brutalized peaceful workers whenever they gathered. Organizers were here and elsewhere in history beaten,evicted etc
Author gives retrospect where she says the main character is perhaps her favorite. Read this book it
Will make you proud to be an American not to mention perhaps inspire you to become a more aware & caring person.

Loved the concept and story. But is the country still generous 20 years later? The epilogue was valuable for filling in the authors motivations and telling us about his writing/ mailing of manuscript to keep it safe.
The nagging question is the minorities who only briefly appear in the book. Guess you would need another "Black Like Me" story to blend into their world. The poor seem tucked away out of sight. They were not the focus of Author's journey. Perhaps other books will be inspired by author's achievement.

Kudos to the U.S. Bishops for a pastoral presentation. They have made a formidable, dry study a delightful story of US the U S Catholic Church.
