Historia
Steven Rinella (The MeatEater Podcast) and Clay Newcomb (MeatEater's Bear Grease podcast) gather listeners for a new round of stories, this time drawing from the lives of the rugged Long Hunters, who include such figures as Daniel Boone, Henry Skaggs, and Kasper Mansker. These were the commercial hunters and trappers who explored and exploited the First Far West, the land across the Appalachian Mountains, in the era between the Seven Years War and the American Revolution—one of the most fabled periods of American history.

Thoughtful yet simple.

The audiobook is thoroughly enjoyable; the stories are interesting, and I really enjoyed the music interspersed between topics or chapters. It gives an authentic touch to the audio. Great production value on this. As someone who has read some history this is definitely geared toward the non-history reader, which is refreshing.
The only gripe I have is some inaccuracies: early on, Mr. Rinella says Native American warfare was not deadly. That is patently not true and furthers the mythologizing of Native Americans and the Rosseauaian "Noble Savage Myth". I would recommend a Lawrence Keeley book, War Before Civilization: The Myth of the Peaceful Savage to clear that up. Why people think natives were all singing Kumbaya until Europeans arrived is complex, but wrong. It is a matter of human nature, regardless of culture. Interesting too because I just listened to the American Buffalo book by a much younger Rinella who said something to the opposite tune in chapter 6, though im having trouble locating exactly where it was. I am admittedly a fan of MeatEater, Rinella and Newcombe and I know they have people reading these so tell the crew to pick up War Before Civilization, you will not be disappointed.
Finally I'm excited that this work opens new ideas for future books of other periods of American history and hunters for MeatEater crew. I assuredly will keep reading, listening, and perhaps leaving reviews!
Overall, I find this audiobook a novel idea and outstanding. Thanks for making this.

Historia
Joseph Conrad's searing tale of one of the strangest and most memorable journeys ever taken. Quite simply the scariest book ever written, this is a searing tale of one of the strangest and most memorable journeys ever undertaken - to the heart of a geographical and psychological wilderness from which no-one returns unscarred. For this isn't simply a journey up an uncharted river into a geographical wilderness; rather, it's a trip deep into our collective subconscious.

First time listening to this work, Mr. Rintoul is fantastic. I thought I was in the Congo Jungle. Conrad's descriptive and ominous tale is one to be remembered.

Historia
This new and original translation of Sallust’s Conspiracy of Catiline and War of Jugurtha uses a fresh, modern English idiom that preserves the flavor of the historian’s famous epigrammatic style. Considered the first of the great Roman historians, Sallust has been read for centuries for his penetrating character studies, timeless moral insights, and matchless rhetoric. His profiles of flawed men led inexorably to ruin by excessive ambition or character defects resonate with us today more powerfully than ever.

Excellent listen for anyone with a broad interest in the Roman Republic, Western history, or Ancient Rome. Sallust & Marius have quickly become some of my favorite Roman characters. My interest is piqued when I hear the narrator, Saethon Williams say "footnote" because you know some good commentary is around the corner. Sallust humble beginnings are relatable to many, and to paraphrase Mr. Curtius, nobody respects moralizing from a goody two shoes. I also appreciate Sallust straight forward style, which makes for a smooth and entertaining listen. As always QC knocks it out of the park. I listened twice in full in about 3 weeks.

Historia
Quintus Curtius is an attorney, writer, translator, and former marine officer. Expertly blending history, biography, philosophy, and the author's personal experience, this penetrating collection of essays achieves what one reviewer called "a perfect fluency in [a] dialogue with truth." The unifying theme is the nature of masculine identity and how that identity has been manifested. Drawing on examples from history and using sources in their original languages, Quintus Curtius' soaring vision combines lucid explanation with a passionate intensity like few other writers.

Historia
The statesman, orator, and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero remains a writer whose influence has been felt for many centuries. Tusculan Disputations is his most wide-ranging philosophical work, and was intended to introduce the Roman people to the pleasures and benefits of the study of philosophy. In a series of stimulating dialogues, Tusculan Disputations examines some of the most fundamental questions of human life: the fear of death, the endurance of pain, the alleviation of sorrow, the various disorders of the soul, and the necessity of virtue for a happy life.

If you are interested in Stocism or the various Roman philosophical schools of thought, this is a necessary listen. I would also approve of it for anyone interested in Roman history. I most enjoyed books IV & V, especially the segment about Dionysius of Syracuse. Masculine virtue is in a free fall; listen to this remarkable translation and expand your mind.
