Helpful primer to prepare for Mass
Revisado: 01-23-25
Fr. Penn takes care to explicate and situate readings such that listeners may be prepared to take note of some of the overarching themes and movements that will help them penetrate all the more when encountered within the Liturgy. There is, perhaps, a particular appeal to a younger audience in his language and candor, but the insights imparted may still be enjoyed by all ages.

Historia
Beth Baxter, owner of a not-very-successful book shop, is planning her marriage to Karl - or at least she was. Without warning, Beth suddenly finds herself embroiled in a sinister series of events that threaten to destroy everything she holds dear. All seems lost for Beth until she receives an offer of help from an unlikely visitor - a former gangland fixer by the name of Clement. However, there’s one minor issue in that Clement claims he died in 1975 and has been sent to help Beth to atone for his actions in a previous life.

Unsuccesful expansion of an idea into a complete novel.
Revisado: 01-23-25
This book fails to develop its proposed narrative in a believable or interesting way, constantly reaffirms the narrators disbelief in the reality that we, the readers, are as much as assured of from the beginning, and alltogether paints a decidedly repulsive and bleak picture of human nature rather than the redemption narrative it seemed to imply in its premise.

Historia
Persuasion, Jane Austen's last novel, is a tale of love and marriage told with irony and insight. Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth have met and seperated years before. Their reunion, after the passage or irrecoverable years of their youth, forces a recognition of the false values that drove them apart.

The subtile wit and penetration of Austin's writing is remarkable indeed.
Revisado: 01-23-25
This is my second read-through of Persuasion - it was the first of Austin's books that I ever read, and I must admit that I did not understand her style then. As someone far more used to grandeosity and adventure in novels, I was unprepared for the quiet, reflective nature of her books, and was put off from reading them for several years. However, I am truely greatful to be able to enjoy them now, and Persuasion is full of humor, insight, and beautiful depictions of genuine friendship and romance.

Historia
As her cousin Duke - the bully of Blue Wing, Minnesota - dangles her precariously from a steel bridge 20 feet above the flood-swollen Mississippi, Claire doesn't expect to softly land on a passing boat or to see Duke floundering in the river. And yet as these unlikely events - and more - suddenly begin to happen, some in the sleepy river town don't seem at all surprised. But when a rhino's horn suddenly sprouts from Duke's face and his parents turn to stone, 12-year-old Claire decides to take action.
