Historia
Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Moving, lyrical, and sad
Revisado: 02-28-25
Definitely a TW: sexual assault for those who are sensitive like me. However, the story is captivating and sad. A story of perseverance when the human condition is violent and tragic. Depicts many angles of human nature, from the cruel to the kind. Told beautifully. Haunting.

Historia
“The kid was objectively a tiny worm, even worse, a worm with my nose.” Welcome to Sarah Hoover’s unflinching take on motherhood and its expectations in which the beatific narrative women have been fed—one of immediate connection to your child followed by a joyful path of maternal discovery—turns out to be not quite true. In The Motherload, Hoover provides a candid, funny, and sobering look at the journey women undertake as expectant mothers and wives from the early days of pregnancy through labor and beyond.

Meaningful, difficult, funny
Revisado: 02-19-25
While the protracted description of her depressed brain’s defective thinking could be tedious at times, I think this is an important description of what postpartum depression can be like. I think it could be useful to women to understand the possible variance of symptoms in the condition and hear a story about how to overcome it. This book captures much of the emotional depth and complexity of motherhood, how joyful, profound, and harrowing it can be all at once. I also appreciated the discussion on how personal identity fluctuates during the process of becoming a mom. I found that relatable and true. Essentially, no holds barred here. I meaningful work that validates any feelings or experience about becoming a mom.

Good concept but
Revisado: 11-26-24
I liked the concept of this book more than I liked the execution. I like this book was about a gay 70-year-old learning to love herself. We need more representation like this in all forms of media. However, I found the telling of the story contrived obvious and overworked.

Like a best friend visiting
Revisado: 11-08-24
This book is like when your best friend from out of town comes to visit and you sit around and drink wine and chat. And they have the best stories to tell in which you learn about them, but also about how to live well, about good business, about food, about the world, and even, about love. When the friend has to leave, you’re sad. I was sad this book was over. A truly inspiring women, living a truly inspiring life.

Observant and sensitive
Revisado: 10-29-24
I keep asking myself why someone would write a novel like this? In which people start off hurt by their parents, continue to hurt each other as adults, get in their own way, and reach a melancholy sort of resolution. The only answer I can come to is that it is true; it’s the human condition. And if youre going to capture this particular facet of generational sadness, struggles with mental health, and a subtle, tried-for hope you might as well tell it with devastating clarity earnestness like coco mellors did here.

Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

A podium for philosophies
Revisado: 10-01-24
This was not a thriller, as advertised, but the simple story arch that served as a vector for the author to explore quasi anthropological musings. Not a lot of depth of character. Not event a ton of plot.

Imaginative and fun
Revisado: 09-12-24
This book was funny and well written. It made an unbelievable premise seem realistic. The slow built to the climax was interesting and made you question “who are you” under circumstances you can’t control or when you’re trying to get what you want. It reflects on the different versions of ourselves when faced with the context of others and how those “selves” mold to context. It challenges the image of yourself versus the reality of yourself. Ultimately about, what is love: is it about having the perfect partner for you, or is it about how maybe your stagnant “self” doesn’t exist, and learning to be accepting and contented with the version of love and self you already have. Such a cool thought experiment and way to ask these questions.

Historia
Leslie Jamison has become one of our most beloved contemporary voices, a scribe of the real, the true, the complex. But while Jamison has never shied away from challenging material—scouring her own psyche and digging into our most unanswerable questions across four books—Splinters enters a new realm. In her first memoir, Jamison turns her unrivaled powers of perception on some of the most intimate relationships of her life: her consuming love for her young daughter, a ruptured marriage once swollen with hope, and the shaping legacy of her own parents’ complicated bond.

Tedious but true
Revisado: 08-21-24
Once she reviled the writing technique she tells her students, I could not unhear it in this book itself. Prepare for many college workshop similes. It’s infuriating to listen to her make so many poor judgement calls but you have to appreciate her level of candor and also my frustration probably also indicates an investment in the character, which signifies a win for the author.
