Unique Story Setup for a Larger Adventure
Revisado: 02-10-25
This is a unique story that focuses on the characters and not the science. The idea that there are "others" or copies of yourself on two different planets. It's an interesting concept that doesn't dwell on or even attempt to explain the science. A suspension of belief is needed to appreciate the story at times and this didn't bother me - I just needed to reel my mind back from overthinking.
As the first novel in a planned 5 part series there is a lot of focus on world building and character development. It's mainly setup to bring the characters together for what will be resolved over the course of the series.
The performance was solid with distinct voices for each of the characters - even the "others" had different voices due to their life circumstances. My typical playback speed is 1.5, however for this book I listened at 1.7.

Historia
When summoned to a fantastical world and granted powers by a broken System, most freshly minted protagonists would strap on their big-boy boots and get ready for their stats to start climbing. But Fischer isn't like most MCs. In fact, he doesn't want to be a hero at all. Fame? Fortune? Power? He had enough of all that in his old life. Discovering forbidden fishing techniques and petting every cute animal that comes within scritching distance? Now that's a good time.

Low Stress Fantasy
Revisado: 10-29-24
Out of the 56 books I've read this year Heretical Fishing is in the top 5.
I tend to listen to audio books on walks and low-stress books like this one make for a better experience. I don't want to constantly be worrying about what bad thing is going to happen. That's not to say there isn't conflict, it's just done in a good way and the entire story isn't entirely focused on it. I will be buying the rest of the series as they are released.
Heath Miller was fantastic as a narrator. Different, discernable voices for each character. Humor in all of the right spots. 10/10.

Amazingly Entertaining
Revisado: 03-21-19
I've read nearly everything that Brandon Sanderson has written. I wasn't really in the mood for a YA title, which is what I assumed this was, but it was the best option in my unread list so I gave it a chance. And then I couldn't put it down. I found myself listening to it far longer than I usually would. I would get to work and keep it playing. I would drive home and keep it playing. Everything Brandon Sanderson writes is fantastic - but this was different. It was laugh out loud funny and smart. It's the best YA that Sanderson has written and I cannot wait for more entries in the series.

Historia
In The Land: Predators, the Mist Village has harnessed its power. With core buildings, professional fighters, and now their own dungeon, the settlement is primed to grow into a kingdom of true power and magic. The path to power has not been without risk, however. The MistVillage has been noticed. Evil nobles from the Kingdom of Law, bloodthirsty goblins from the Serrated Mountains, an undead lord with a penchant for human sacrifice, and fanatical kobolds from the Depths all plot the village's destruction.

A HUGE addition to the series
Revisado: 08-06-18
The author is very engaged with his fanbase on Facebook - which is always great to see. The book is tremendous in size, length and content. I didn’t think I would like litRPG but since sampling the first I quickly finished the rest of the series. The narrator is one of the best in the business with multiple distinctive voices.

Historia
As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

Amazing production of an OK story
Revisado: 01-27-18
Having just come off of a 50+ hour massive audiobook I was looking for something shorter and different. This was ideal. The production value is fantastic. Like listening to a movie. The only reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars was Ash. Voice was great, but it seemed his main purpose in the narration was to remove any and all suspense from the story. Ash was "captain obvious" throughout the story and it honestly would have been a better story without about half of his content. Still worth the listen though, if only for the production value.

Surprised me
Revisado: 10-12-16
I wasn't expecting to like this series as much as I did. Normally I enjoy standard fantasy or sci-fi. A story about super heroes? Probably not for me but I picked it up strictly because it was the only series by Sanderson I had not yet read. The last time I did this it was for the YA series Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians. I found that series too juvenile for my tastes and was expecting more of the same here.
I was absolutely wrong. I could not stop listening. From the first few pages I was engrossed and every time I stopped I looked forward to listening again. Great story. Great narrator. Can't wait to start the next book.
