High Magic has been lost to Valdemar centuries ago when the last Herald-Mage gave his life to save the kingdom from destruction by dark sorceries. Yet now the realm is at risk again. And Elspeth, Herald and heir to the throne, must take up the challenge, abandoning her home to find a mentor who can awaken her untrained mage abilities. But others, too, are being caught up in a war against sorcerous evil.

Horrible narrator
Revisado: 06-02-24
Great story but the narrator doesn't even know what she is reading and cannot pronounce "Merc's" (as in short for mercenaries) to save her life. She calls them "MEERS" or "MERIKS" and once or twice she actually gets it right as "MERKS" so it's evident she can pronounce the word but just doesn't pay enough attention to what she is reading to do so. Since this word is frequently used in the story it's jarring and immensely irritating and makes me want to scream every time she mispronounces it. What idiot of an editor skimmed over this production without caring about the quality of their own work? FIRE THEM IMMEDIATELY.

Historia
For short-lived races like humans, space is dominated by the complicated, grandiose Mercatoria. To the Dwellers who may live billions of years, the galaxy consists of their gas-giant planets - the rest is debris. Fassin Taak is a Slow Seer privileged to work with the Dwellers of the gas-giant Nasqueron. His work consists of rummaging for data in their vast, disorganised memories and libraries. Unfortunately, without knowing it, he's come close to an ancient secret of unimaginable importance.

Terrible editing
Revisado: 03-05-24
Having read the print version years ago, I remember this book being a fun and interesting read. But this audio book is unlistenable. There is no pause or any indication at all between scene changes and the narrator just drones on in his monotone endlessly to the point where you're quickly lost in the narrative and have no idea when or where or who is going on. Plus the fact that this book is broken up into only 6 chapters each 3 to 4 hours long just makes this production complete garbage. I want my money back.

Historia
The shady crew of the White Raven run freight and salvage at the fringes of our solar system. They discover the wreck of a centuries-old exploration vessel floating light years away from its intended destination and revive its sole occupant, who wakes with news of First Alien Contact. When the crew break it to her that humanity has alien allies already, she reveals that these are very different extra-terrestrials and the gifts they bestowed on her could kill all humanity, or take it out to the most distant stars.

inventive but juvenile
Revisado: 03-09-23
Decently inventive conceptualization of alien species and civilizations that is somewhat well told and excellently performed. However the story is rather shallow, obvious, trite, and lacking in the science part of science fiction. The ruination of the work is the author's juvenile fascination with lesbian flirtation and sex that constantly intrudes on the narrative like a horny teenage boy having a fantasy. It's so shallow and transparently the authors fetish that it's offensive.

Historia
The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, provably, the End Days for the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture 10,000 years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations; they are going to Sublime, elevating themselves to a new and almost infinitely more rich and complex existence.

Slow down!
Revisado: 03-06-23
Holy caffeine addiction, somebody take this narrator's coffee away. This guy talks so fast it's incredibly hard to follow. If you slow playback down to 0.75 its just about normal. Otherwise you might as well be listening to an auctioneer on speed. Totally ruins the listening experience

Narration editing is terrible
Revisado: 02-02-23
This would be a good book except the editors omited section breaks, so that there is no pause or any indication of a change in scene, setting, or character. The narrator just drones from a planet side scene to a totally unrelated space station or ship scene with absolutely no change of pace or inflection so that the listener ends up lost. Horrible job audible, you should be ashamed.

More than plant advice
Revisado: 03-31-22
Great podcast from Gardeners' World magazine that discusses much more than how to plant and care for ornamentals and veg. This show is a more holistic and inclusive approach to gardening, including how our growing methods and choices affect our hearts, minds, and not only our mental and physical health but also that of the entire ecosystem including insects, birds, mammals, amphibians and more.

How did this win a Hugo?
Revisado: 11-18-21
This is not science fiction. It's English lit class in space. How did this garbage win a Hugo award? The story is boring, has minimal setting, dull characters and un-followable prose with no action. And the naming convention is ridiculous.
