Historia
Elliott Smith was one of the most gifted songwriters of the 90s, adored by fans for his subtly melancholic words and melodies. The sadness had its sources in life. There was trauma from an early age, years of drug abuse, and a chronic sense of disconnection that sometimes seemed self-engineered. Smith died violently in LA in 2003, under what some believe to be questionable circumstances, of stab wounds to the chest. By this time fame had found him, and record-buyers who shared the listening experience felt he spoke directly to them from beyond: astute, damaged, lovelorn, fighting, until he could fight no more.

Almost interesting, often overwrought, poorly read

Well Written/Pretty Intense
Revisado: 07-25-20
I thought it was well researched and appreciate that the author took the time explore some of Smith’s recording techniques. Of course, I cant get enough shop talk and would always like more, but many music biographies leave the technical process out entirely so I was happy he included what he did. My one personal bias is that I’m not a big fan of people analyzing lyrics for me. I do recognize that this might be an important component for others, so I’ll try not to let my subjectivity get in the way, but it is my sole reason for giving a 4 star review instead of 5. If your into that, and are up for a sad (but not unnecessarily
melodramatic) story then you will be more than satisfied with this book.

Narration has no inflection
Revisado: 08-19-15
What would have made Horseman, Pass By better?
The narrator makes no effort to change his tone... ever. It's hard to listen to the dialogue especially. Your really can't tell if someone is asking a question, telling a joke, sobbing, etc. I'm probably spoiled and used to narrators who develop a different voice for each character. But this guy is going above and beyond to make the entire reading monotone. The regional dialect is especially bad, it sounds so out if place in his delivery.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Haven't finished yet. I do have a problem with people writing reviews before they finish, but this narrator is going to make this a grueling experience and I had to say something.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kerin McCue’s performances?
No, not unless he has figured out that audio books in the 21st century have become a genuine source of entertainment and performance art. This reads like a textbook.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I really am having trouble following the reader. He sucks all the emotion out of the story. His interpretation of the style, punctuation, and inflection that McMurtry had in mind is completely absent. I'd rather listen to a reader who has a bad sense of interpreting characters than no style at all.
Any additional comments?
I just wish this book could be re-released with a different reader. It was done in the early 90's before audio books were a viable source of entertainment for over 50 million people in the U.S. This just sounds informational.
