As the Cards drop a heartbreaker to the Mets, Daniel (@C70) talks it over with Nate from Talking About Birds (talkingaboutbirds.com). The guys talk about some of the frustrations about the bullpen, rave over Brendan Donovan's start, and then get into some of the other issues of the day. What are the Cardinals doing with Nolan Gorman? What happens when Masyn Winn returns next week? Is having a "defensive closer" really what the club needs? The guys also talk about the rotation and the upswing of Jordan Walker. No Bens were used in the making of this podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. ...

Great episode this week! It was great to hear Nate from Talking About Birds in MMAM this week. Excellent content thus week and agree, not sure we need a "defensive closer" at this point. Closers are nice to have, but you can't close unless you're actually winning.

The Cardinals looked very solid in series wins over the Phillies and Astros, but boy, did it go sideways on them in Flushing. The Mets swept a four-game series over the weekend, and Bernie Miklasz and Will Leitch run down what went wrong and how frustrated Cardinals fans should be. We also debate Thomas Saggese vs. Michael Siani and how Oliver Marmol is handling this team. Also, don't forget our book event for Will's next novel at Left Bank Books on June 26. Fun! Revisado: 01-28-25
Excellent episode! Great start to 2024 Kim and what a spectacular guest you had in this episode with Constant Reader Grady Hendrix! Thank you for this one! Such amazing timing for me as this past weekend I began his 2023 novel "How to Sell a Haunted House" and loving it so far at about 25% complete.
I had no idea he is such a devoted CR! I will definitely be spending some time on his site going forward.

It's a special show this week as Daniel (@C70) welcomes in St. Louis legend Bernie Miklasz (@b_miklasz) to the show for the first time with Allen (@amedlock1) unavoidably detained with AD duties. The guys talk about Bernie's embrace of podcasting as well as writing and how his radio background informs his approach. Then they tackle the cold Cardinal winter, weaving in recent Cardinal history as they look at the problems of the team before wrapping up by discussing some of the current players on the squad. Plus Rich (@remembirds) brings us some Dizzy Dean knowledge. It's a full and fun show! ...

Welcome back and Happy New Year. 2025 looms ahead. Frightening. Uncertain. Crazy!! Our first guest of the year has written the book that best captures this mad future we’re living in. Clay McLeod Chapman returns to Talking Scared, to talk about Wake Up And Open Your Eyes – his new novel of mass demonic possession, transmitted through poisonous media, and the destruction of families and communities. It’s… disturbing. It’s also gross as hell. Deliciously so. And we talk about that urge for the the ick! As well as his motivations in writing this book, his anxiety over releasing...

Zephyr, Alabama, is an idyllic hometown for eleven-year-old Cory Mackenson - a place where monsters swim the river deep and friends are forever. Then, one cold spring morning, Cory and his father witness a car plunge into a lake - and a desperate rescue attempt brings his father face-to-face with a terrible, haunting vision of death. As Cory struggles to understand his father's pain, his eyes are slowly opened to the forces of good and evil that surround him.

Outstanding tale of a boy in small town America
Revisado: 01-04-25
I've read or listened to McMammon's work previously and each time come away from a wonderfully written tale, "Boy's Life" equals this previous measure. I listened to the Audible version narrated by George Newbern. Newbern does an amazing job of giving Cory a voice as well as distinguishes himself with the cast of other characters.
I have previously read that it was comparative to King's "It", but I would venture to say it was closer to King's "The Body" rather than "It". Sure, there are some aspects that are a bit similar to "It", but as a whole, "The Body" is what I think fits best. Not to say that it is the same mind you, just that they have some similarities. But alas, this review isn't about King's work, it is about "Boy's Life".
"Boy's Life" is about 11-year-old Cory Mackenson who lives in Zephyr, Alabama in the early 1960s. Told from Cory's perspective we tag along with his (and occasionally some of his friends) adventures in Zephyr. Zephyr is very much stereotypical small town Americana that many writers have written about before. Being in Alabama and in the Jim Crow era, there are some scenes that while they disturbing they felt realistic for the time period and locale. Fortunately, the main story itself is not centered on this narrative.
Overall, "Boy's Life" is an outstanding tale of a boy in small town America and his adventures and challenges in life. Since I was once a boy in small town America, there was a lot to relate to in the character of Cory. Cory has quite the imagination and will eventually be a writer and his voice is one of a splendid youth, but not a youth without a myriad challenges and triumphs.
My rating is a very solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Bob Kendrick tells the pioneering story of Don Newcombe. In a turbulent time in America, Newcombe exhibited the resilience and determination that were hallmarks of the Negro Leagues. In an interview at the NLBM with former Negro Leaguer and Dodgers OF Lou Johnson, you’ll hear Newcombe in his own words: From his humble beginnings growing up in New Jersey, to joining the Negro Leagues as a teen, to winning Rookie of the Year and multiple MVP awards with the Dodgers, to his role in the Civil Rights Movement. Don Newcombe was a trailblazer and along with Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella,...

Excellent tale
Revisado: 12-12-24
Percival Everett's "James" is an excellent tale. A tale that takes Twain's classic "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and gives readers and listeners a 180 degree different perspective and what it was like to be the enslaved character Jim while using many of the pieces of "Finn".
The Audible version of "James" is quite superb as narrator Dominic Hoffman lends his voice. And listeners, his voice is the perfect voice to bring Jim to life. Massive kudos to Hoffman in this performance.
Everett's novel does an amazing job of placing us in Jim's world and how he sees and reacts. Obviously from a different time in America, but nonetheless the history of America and one that hasn't been told the way it deserves to be. "James" is an inspiring work of art, but also heart breaking. This should be on every historical fiction fan's TBR if they haven't already read or listened to it.

Historia
First came the man: a young wanderer in a fatigue coat and long hair. Then came the legend, as John Rambo sprang from the pages of FIRST BLOOD to take his place in the American cultural landscape. This remarkable novel pits a young Vietnam veteran against a small-town cop who doesn't know whom he's dealing with - or how far Rambo will take him into a life-and-death struggle through the woods, hills, and caves of rural Kentucky.

An Immovable Object Versus an Unstoppable Force
Revisado: 12-12-24
My headline says it all, "First Blood" is truly a tale of an immovable object versus an unstoppable force. You have probably seen the movie version and if that is all that you know about "First Blood" you know the basis of the plot. However, what the novel version gives you is a much more in depth character study between the immovable man that is local police chief Wilfred Teasle and the unstoppable force that is Vietnam veteran John Rambo. Author David Morrell brings you into the minds of these two flawed individuals making it nearly impossible to choose who the antagonist is and who the protagonist is. How far is each man willing to go to prove to the other they are right? Stubborn doesn't begin to describe these two individuals.
The good news is if you're listening to this selection you are in for a real treat, Morrell's characters are splendidly written and astoundingly brought to life by narrator Eric G. Dove. You will not go wrong if you do. Solid 5 out of 5 stars.
