Historia
On a small farm in Iowa, from the age of seven Norman would rise before dawn and work the fields. He and his two younger sisters would raise cattle, pigs, and chickens; he would fish and hunt and tend to the corn and oat fields. It was grueling labor, and he hated it. In 1933, Norman left the farm and headed for Minneapolis with $61 in his pocket. He was a determined student and majored in agriculture-forestry at the University of Minnesota. First in Mexico, and then in India, Norman would travel the globe offering his unique knowledge.

But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Before cell phones that fit in the palm of your hand and slim laptops that fit snugly into briefcases, computers were like strange, alien vending machines.
