Historia
Leopold Bloom King has been raised in a family shattered - and shadowed - by tragedy. Lonely and adrift, he searches for something to sustain him and finds it among a tightly knit group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston, South Carolina’s dark legacy of racism and class divisions, these friends will endure until a final test forces them to face something none of them are prepared for.

I listened to the story before taking up a 4 year assignment in the holy city. After immersing myself in the whole microcosm I read again with a deeper understanding, love, and reverence for the city.

Historia
They'll chase you. They'll rip you open. They'll feed on you.... When the sickness came, every parent, policeman, politician - every adult - fell ill. The lucky ones died. The others are crazed, confused and hungry. Only children under 14 remain whole, and they're fighting to survive. Now there are rumours of a safe place to hide. And so a gang of children begin their quest across London, where all through the city - down alleyways, in deserted houses, underground - the grown-ups lie in wait. But can they make it there alive?

Frighteningly gripping. Toe curling in part.
Revisado: 11-13-24
Hard, vicious, uncomfortably possible. Not (maybe) from disease, but from culture or demographics.
Well read (Paul Whitehouse is a great comic actor and raconteur)

Every bit as good as the previous works. The part, crossing 45degrees north, was heart stopping.

Same thing as in warfare. Nothing goes to plan. Nobody deals with situations as John Wayne or James Bond.
It”s reasonable to expect the Secret Service to be more professional than most companies in the western world - but there is AT LEAST as much BS at upper management and accounting levels. The guys at the coal face are the core of the business, regardless of what happens in the board room.
Excellent podcast.

I never knew this story, but knew just the name, “Unabomber”.
Long but thorough piece by piece investigation is obviously mirrored by the narrative.
It was quite an epic tale, but held me in suspense, and I (semi) binged over a couple of days.
Terrific story. All too unfortunately it was not fiction.

Excellent apart from minor pronunciation gaffs
Revisado: 05-12-21
Thoroughly enjoyed the whole book. I am familiar with BP and their incredible work during the 40’s. Hope this encourages readers to visit the charitable site at least once in a lifetime.
Sorry for the loss of one star in the narration, but the odd Keswick (pronounces Kes’ick) and the spelling out of the N.A.A.F.I. when it is pronounced as is, as one word. There were a few others that made me smile rather than grimace. But to be fair, the narration was otherwise excellent.
Nice job all round. This has been one of the best audiobooks in my library.
