Historia
In 2021 cryptocurrency went mainstream. Giant investment funds were buying it, celebrities like Tom Brady endorsed it, and TV ads hailed it as the future of money. Hardly anyone knew how it worked—but why bother with the particulars when everyone was making a fortune from Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, or some other bizarrely named “digital asset”? As he observed this frenzy, investigative reporter Zeke Faux had a nagging question: Was it all just a confidence game of epic proportions? What started as curiosity—with a dash of FOMO—would morph into a two-year globe-spanning quest.

Great book on the crypto scam
Revisado: 11-01-23
This is the first book or article I’ve read that actually explains what Faux call the crypto casino. Excellent at both explicating the bizarre crypto phenomenon and as a piece of investigative journalism. Far better than the Michael Lewis flash for piece going infinite

Historia
When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

Not worth it
Revisado: 10-25-23
This books seems to have mostly been written before the FTX downfall. Lewis does not reinterpret or revisit events in light of the scandal. Instead, from both laziness and stupidity, he attempts to resuscitate SBF.
Everyone who is against SBF according to Lewis is too dumb to understand “Sam’s world”.
Only SNF and Lewis understand Sam’s world. Ray, the ceo who took over the ftx mess, doesn’t understand anything according to Lewis. Though, Ray’s biggest most damning charges, that SBF funded Alameda with FTX consumer deposits and that FTX and alameda had no controls of any sort, no risk officer, nor org chart and no real structure, are all corroborated in the book.
This book, instead of explaining SBF and FTX, explains what happens when a writer get to enamored with his subject and losses perspective.
Lewis-you struck out.

Historia
In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen.

Historia
Pope John Paul II, as part of his effort to improve Catholic-Jewish relations, himself called for a clear-eyed historical investigation into any possible link between the Church and the Holocaust. An important sign of his commitment was the decision to allow the distinguished historian David I. Kertzer, a specialist in Italian history, to be one of the first scholars given access to long-sealed Vatican archives. The result is a book filled with shocking revelations.

Sad legacy of Catholicism
Revisado: 05-16-21
This book is a repudiation of all attempted whitewashing of catholic complicity in modern anti Semitism-including nazism
Kertzer brilliantly demonstrates that catholic anti Semitism was a product of a modern and virulent strain of church sanctioned anti semitism-led by popes, future popes and those close to the pope
Kertzer - using the Vatican’s own archives - traces many of the most caustic and inhumane anti Semitic tropes, including Protocols of the Elders of Zion, jewish domination, blood libels and jewish conspiracies-back to the church, which were either created by the church or promulgated by the church.
It is sad and hypocritical, though, sadly, not shocking, that an institution that preaches confession of sin as part of forgiveness cannot bring itself to confess its own sins.
A truly shameful history, the repercussion of which we continue to live with to this day.

Historia
One summer day in 1941, half of the Polish town of Jedwabne murdered the other half, 1,600 men, women, and children, all but seven of the town's Jews. Neighbors tells their story. This is a shocking, brutal story that has never before been told. It is the most important study of Polish-Jewish relations to be published in decades and should become a classic of Holocaust literature. Jan Gross pieces together eyewitness accounts and other evidence into an engulfing reconstruction of the horrific July day remembered well by locals but forgotten by history.

Courageous account of what really happened.
Revisado: 04-01-19
Neighbors is a courageous telling of the truth of what happened to many polish Jews during WWII. Killed not by nazis or the German army but by their own neighbors. This story is well known to the few victims who survived the murders, but rarely told. Shamefully, Poland still refuses to admit to the less than heroic tale of their own nations part as Hitler’s willing executioners.

Churchill: A Life follows Winston Churchill from his earliest days to his moments of triumph. Here, the drama and excitement of his story are ever-present. Martin Gilbert gives us a vivid portrait, using Churchill's most personal letters and the recollections of his contemporaries, both friends and enemies, to go behind the scenes of some of the stormiest and most fascinating political events of our time.

Amazing performance
Revisado: 08-04-17
Gilbert's biography provides a comprehensive overview of a remarkable life in a relatively short book. A great book for those, like me, who know little about Churchill and wish to learn more. One quibble, I wish the book provided more insight into Churchill's psyche. Rodska's performance is extraordinarily.

Misleading title and partisan history
Revisado: 11-20-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book subtitled "The rise of ISIS" spends less than a 1/3 of the text actually describing ISIS. Instead, the book details the rise and death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed in 2006, long before the Syrian crisis and the true rise of ISIS. Unfortunately, even given this attention, I gained little insight into Zarqawi's character from the text.
What was most disappointing about Joby Warrick’s story?
By focusing in on the rise of Zarqawi, who was killed in 2006, Warrick is able to blame the Bush administration for the rise of ISIS. The Bush policy shortsightedness and failures are well known and better documented elsewhere. However, the Obama administration, oppressive Arabic regimes, the Jordanian government and even Islamic radicalism are all let off the hook by Mr. Warrick. Why? The Jordanians foolishly released Zarqawi from prison, yet Warrick plays the role of Jordanian apologist. Why? The Obama administration failure to respect self imposed "red lines," abandonment of a leadership role in the Middle East and complete failure to see the oncoming extremist threat, despite real time warnings, is not even discussed by Mr. Warrick. Why not? Arab countries willingness and even active participation in anti-American and anti-semitic rhetoric is not discussed as a radicalizing force. Nor, is the oppressive Arabic regimes discussed as possible destabilizing threat. Why not?
The only reason is that Mr. Warrick eschewed a complex etiology for the ISIS rise in favor of a partisan, everything-is-Bush's-fault, ideology. As such, this book fails in explaining anything other than the author's very own prejudices.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sunil Malhotra?
Anyone who could properly pronounce Arabic names.

Historia
On June 27, 1976, an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris was hijacked by a group of Arab and German terrorists who demanded the release of 53 terrorists. The plane was forced to divert to Entebbe in Uganda - ruled by the murderous despot Idi Amin, who had no interest in intervening. Days later, Israeli commandos disguised as Ugandan soldiers assaulted the airport terminal, killed all the terrorists, and rescued all the hostages but three who were killed in the crossfire. The assault force suffered just one fatality.

Great story marred by narrator and epilogue
Revisado: 10-09-16
A well deserved, adequately researched and well written account of the Entebbe rescue is marred by the mediocre, tendentious and reflexively anti-Israel, Israel-is-to-blame-for-everything conclusion. Additionally, the narrator either didn't care to learn or couldn't pronounce basic Hebrew vowels and the 'kh' guttural.
