Brittney’s story is a sad one. Michelle Williams delivers this so well and honestly sounds a bit like her in some ways.
You feel like you understand Brittney better with her context and point of view.

Jill did a beautiful job with this. She speaks her truth and does so in a way that’s so raw while leaving out sordid details and allowing other members of her family privacy.
She tells her own story without telling others’ stories for them. She’s respectful while also standing her ground and standing up for herself and others when she needs to. It’s endearing and moving and peels back the veil all while being a quick and honest listen.
This is a triumph she and her boys can and should be proud of.

It makes me think of the old adage that says something about never meeting your hero’s. Not to say MP was a hero of mine, but Uffda- you’d think there might be a sliver of humility in there somewhere after what he’s been (put himself) through, but his lack of self awareness is apparent from the beginning of the book, and lasts throughout. There are attempts to be relatable that fall flat as well as awkward attempts to inflate his own sense of importance…
There are times where you know a memoir isn’t going to make you like the writer necessarily, and that isn’t always the goal I suppose, but you feel like you learned something worthwhile about the writer, and grew in some way while reading it. You want something authentic…in this case, I think Matthew Perry THINKS he is being clever, insightful, “raw” and funny, but he just comes off as off-putting, cringey, out of touch, and overly delighted to name drop like a has-been.
His delivery is slurred due to the damage done to his mouth and dental issues and can be distracting at times, but can’t really be held against him I guess.

I enjoyed listening to the author tell their story from first person perspective. I appreciated the honesty in which they shared their experiences. I really feel like this book allowed me to reflect on my own experience with certain things and feel less alone in the world. “Oh, Prince Harry deals with that too? I’m not so weak as I maybe thought.” It’s written and read in a way that’s relatable and easy to consume.

reader pronounces CAROLINE as CAROLYN....these aren't the same or interchangeable. JFK and Jackie's daughter, and the Kennedy private jet, is known to all Kennedy followers and the mispronounced name repeatedly is highly distracting and disappointing. how this wasn't addressed in production is beyond me, and should be embarrassing to the narrator. otherwise well done, but it cannot be over looked when you cannot pronounce a name of an immediate family member correctly.

I enjoyed the first half of this book much more than the second. The author writes in a conversational style. This is okay enough, and not the real issue. He tends to jump around in time and mentions things that aren't directly related to the storyline and therefore unnecessary and somewhat confusing. He also tends to digress in parts and ramble on others. This muddles the story that is at its core, VERY interesting on its own. I don't disagree with most of the conclusions, but through the extra opinions and sidebars, it is hard to not become frustrated.
