Historia
When a Demonic Assault occurs, most people stuck inside of a Fracture end up hiding inside of a bunker in the hopes that they don’t get killed by a demon. Others might even hope for the slightest possible chance at signing a contract with a spirit and becoming a Guardian. So when Scarlet was caught in a Fracture, the last thing she expected was to become a demon herself. Exactly two centuries ago, humanity was struck with their very first Demonic Assault.

It's LitRPG slop, but you already knew that
Revisado: 05-06-25
So, this is a litRPG. It was probably on Royal Road before it was published, which is why there are so many gosh darn chapters of it. You know it's bad in the same way Mc Donalds is bad. But just like the fact that you're still gonna order two number 9s with a number 9 large, you're probably gonna give this a listen. So where's what you're in for.
The writing is in need of an editor to tighten up unnecessary repetition.
You will not care about a single character. You aren't even really given a reason to care about the main character or her vague ambitions.
The world itself is nonsensical if you think about its nuances for even ten seconds.
Just about everything the MC does works out for her. Setbacks and failures just ain't a thing in her reality. She's also one of those "I only do pragmatic things for my own benefit" characters who always end up finding excuses to help the people around her. So that's annoying.
I could go on, but you get the idea. As for the performance, it is passable so long as you use audible's speed-up feature. Otherwise the narrators are AGONIZINGLY slow, to the point that even listening at 1.3 speed can sometimes have the male narrator's words come out a little slower than it should be.
So, would I recommend this? Yeah. Just like Mc Donalds is comfort food, this is a comfort listen. Lobotomize yourself a while and listen to some dumb LitRPG fun. There are certainly far worse LitRPGs out there.

The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

My main problem is that I just want more
Revisado: 02-14-25
I really loved this book from beginning to end. In the interest of making an actually constructive review, here's what's what.
If you liked the previous DCC books, you'll probably like this one too. A lot of the previous plot threads have been building up to faction wars and I think this book executed on those plot points brilliantly. You have the usual cocktail of humor, chaos, action, tension, rising stakes and more.
My biggest problem with this book is the problem I have with the series in general. So many Skills, levels, magic/sci-fi systems, and gimmicks are annoying and difficult for my smooth monkey brain to keep up with. Every now and then someone will seem like they're in a pickle and then use a skill that I totally forgot was a thing. Normally it's fine, but sometimes it feels like every character has a magical wand of infinite BS that can be used at any moment for both good guys and bad guys. But then again, maybe that's part of the fun?

All is not well in the Letherii Empire. Rhulad Sengar, the Emperor of a Thousand Deaths, spirals into madness, surrounded by sycophants and agents of his Machiavellian chancellor, while the Letherii secret police conduct a campaign of terror against their own people. The Errant, once a far-seeing god, is suddenly blind to the future. Conspiracies seethe throughout the palace as the empire edges closer to all-out war with the neighboring kingdoms.

kind of disappointing character endings
Revisado: 01-19-25
Far too many characters have wonderful plotlines right up until the very end. i can only assume Erickson was huffing pure dissatisfaction and exhaling it on the pages because regardless of if the characters live or die their endings are just unsatisfying. i think there is literally one exception to this rule in the entire book. Also, I can't help but wonder why some plot points even bother existing while other, far more interesting plot points, resolve entirely "off screen". overall, still a strong malazan book, but definitely the weakest of the lot so far.

Historia
The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y’Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails. The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress makes the battle-weary Malazan Fourteenth Army uneasy. For it was here that the Empire’s greatest champion, Dassem Ultor, was slain and a tide of Malazan blood spilled. A place of foreboding, its smell is of death. But elsewhere, agents of a far greater conflict have made their opening moves.

felt somewhat scattered but still great
Revisado: 01-13-25
this story travels a lot from one place and plot point to the next. It feels like a long interlude in some ways, wrapping up the loose ends of previous books so it can move on to others. still, great fun. Hellion is easily one of my favorite side characters.

After decades of internecine warfare, the tribes of the Tiste Edur have at last united under the Warlock King of the Hiroth. There is peace - but it has been exacted at a terrible price: a pact made with a hidden power whose motives are at best suspect, at worst, deadly. To the south, the expansionist kingdom of Lether, eager to fulfill its long-prophesized renaissance as an Empire reborn, has enslved all its less-civilized neighbors with rapacious hunger. All, that is, save one - the Tiste Edur. And it must be only a matter of time before they too fall.

Not great, but better than nothing.
Revisado: 06-13-24
As a long time fan of TWI I can say that this is probably one of the bigger disappointments in the series. The intro is boring. The MC is a pathological lying, judgemental prick who I think we're supposed to root for and agree with, and what few themes are in the story are poorly explained and poorly explored, even with a scene which drags on as an actual debate about one of the themes.
There are a few writing inconsistencies in terms of characters and the way they're written, especially with the main villain, and the story can get lost in the melodrama sometimes. There were points while listening where I literally said "yes, yes, get on with it!"
Pirateaba has a bad habit of writing internal monologues justifying why someone who shouldn't even consider doing something or behaving a certain way will end up doing that thing. This is just a general weakness in their writing and is present here a few times.
Andrea's performance is great but I think I caught 2 times where the audio on a line looped and a few times where the performance didn't really match what I thought was being expressed in the text.
In general, the beginning of the story is a snorefest, the middle is okay, and I think it generally ends on a high note. If Cara was replaced with literally any other character, this could have been a great story. As it is, it gets a solid "pretty good" out of "I love it" on the overall rating.

pretty good
Revisado: 04-20-24
after listening to, and somewhat disliking the realmslayer audio drama, i was hesitant to pick up another AoS gotrek book, but this one was pretty good. i jumped from realmslayer to this because i wanted to see what the latest adventures were like. This definitely isn't the same Dwarf from the Gotrek and Felix series. He seems more talkative and empathetic, though it feels like a natural evolution of Gotrek's character, imo, and leads to better character moments.
he is paired with a priestess who has lost her faith and seems like a good foil to pair up with Gotrek. overall, i liked this.
the performance was amazing. no surprises there!

Historia
Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Immensely boring
Revisado: 02-24-24
IDK what genre you'd put this story under. I might argue game-lit just because of the card system, but even then it doesn't feel like a game-lit kind of story. It's kind of fitting because the genre of game-lit has a problem where the stories really lack cohesion. There isn't proper setup or structure to conflicts and sometimes you can tell that an author went in with an idea that they rapidly got bored with. So they take the story in other directions and end up ruining whatever half-baked idea they had. The problem is that the half-baked idea was the hook, and now it's been effectively ditched.
This summarizes my experience with Jake's Magical Market. It starts with the cards and the idea of Jake opening a store with magical items at first, but then the story rapidly loses focus as if it wasn't sure what to do with the story from that premise. So it dabbled into being something of a town-management story, but then it got bored of that and changed again into something else entirely which I won't spoil, but then it ONCE AGAIN becomes something else after that, and suddenly the thing I came here for isn't even relevant to what's going on and is happening with zero foreshadowing.
It's frustrating, boring, and not worth your time unless you just NEED a weirder game-lit adjacent thing in your life.

In the World-that-Was, Gotrek Gurnisson was a whirlwind of fury on a quest for redemption. In the Mortal Realms, he remains a whirlwind of fury on a quest for redemption - and where slaying the worst that the worlds of Warhammer have to offer is concerned, there's a lot to be said for consistency. Come along for the ride with the slayer himself with this collection of Gotrek audio dramas written by David Guymer.

Gotrek is fun, not sure how to feel about AoS
Revisado: 12-19-23
As a new fan to the Gotrek and Felix series I was interested in seeing the Age of Sigmar setting through Gotrek's eyes. This audio drama is great for people who like audio dramas. It has lots of hammy performances where people act their hearts out and has the feeling of a stage play in some ways. But as an introduction to AoS it falls flat.
I think the main way to put it is that the settings lack personality or character. The city of Hammerhall is introduced and I have NO idea what it would look like, what the people within the city are like, what level of magic or technology it has access to, who rules the city or why it's important or what kind of history it has. This is partially because the story isn't content to set down roots and just tell a darn story. It sends Gotrek across several the mortal realms, which sounds nice at first, but it ends up feeling as though you've stepped foot into a setting as vast as an ocean and as shallow as a puddle.
Maybe it's the fault of this being an audio drama or maybe AoS is just too big for any setting smaller than a whole mortal realm to matter, but this really didn't make me want to continue with AoS. I might try with an actual audioBOOK in the future, but for now I've lost interest.

The weakness of Web Serials in 36 hours
Revisado: 09-28-23
As many other reviews have said, the story kind of doesn't go anywhere. It's just the downside of a web serial that focus is often lost in the interest of variety, world building, and character development.
That said, The Wind Runner does have a bunch of smaller, shorter stories and smaller arcs which are still enjoyable. Such mini arcs and their mini-reviews include:
Ryoka being Ryoka and doing Ryoka things - I like Ryoka, so even though not much happens, it's nice to see her again.
The life and times of the United Nations Company on Belaros - It's a decent sub-arc with three main characters just seeming to find their place in the new world they find themselves in. Still fun to listen to.
Erin and Numbtongue spending several chapters being sad about the end of the goblin lord arc before finally finding a sense of normality - This could have been shortened considerably. Not fun to listen to.
Lyonette's existence being acknowledged - an OK mini arc
Adventurers doing adventurer things - Good fun.
Overall this one earns a good/10, Don't go into this one expecting an overarching plot. It's a bunch of mini plots. Approach it with that mindset and you're good to go!
