Called in to investigate, DCI Evan Warlow’s team are faced with finding out how and why the body of a struck-off doctor ended up on a lonely beach within sight of Laugharne’s famous boathouse. But this is no innocent victim. This is a man with more enemies than friends. A fact that muddies the waters no end as Warlow unearths more and more of the dead man’s sordid history. Not to mention a long line of suspects.

Favorite So Far
Revisado: 07-29-24
I continue to enjoy the sprinkles of humor and the excellent characters. No overload of information is given about the characters, but they still feel real to me. I also found the mystery very satisfying and enjoyable. As with the last novel, another new character was introduced who might become a regular. Highly recommended!

Solid, Entertaining Read
Revisado: 07-27-24
While the mystery seemed pretty obvious in this one, the characters were good, including the addition of a new regular that I hope sticks around, the humor made me laugh out loud a couple times, and the pacing, settings, detail, and prose were all excellent.
And while I was confident I had this one figured out early on, there was still doubt until the end.
I enjoyed it thoroughly and would highly recommend it.

Exactly What I Was Looking For
Revisado: 07-24-24
It's very difficult for me to find fiction I like. I'm not big on novels or series set in the sprawling metropolises where so many take place. I'm not fond of protagonists that are young and beautiful and somewhat saint-like. I prefer characters who could be real people with real problems related to both the direct plot lines and to their lives outside of that main story. I especially prefer characters who are somewhat weathered by life and have some experience under their belts. I prefer police procedurals.
This novel checks all my boxes and I'm delighted to learn it's the first in a series of novels that I'm looking forward to reading.
It's a good story with good characters, and it's well-written. And it has a sprinkling of humor, which is always appreciated.

Historia
By the author of Ashes Under Water, here is one of the great untold stories of World War II. The Hidden Hindenburg at last reveals the cause of aviation's most famous disaster and the duplicity that kept the truth from coming to light for three generations. It also finally catches up with a German legend who misled the world about the Hindenburg to bury his own Nazi connections.

Not about the Hindenburg
Revisado: 11-29-23
This history mainly concentrates on the Nazi regime, including their rise to power. It's not really a book about the Hindenburg, although the Hindenburg does gets mentioned when the natural progression of history reaches the point where the Hindenburg was relevant. It's also mainly an attack on Hugo Eckener, who is clearly the "villain" targeted by this book. Granted, if the book had concentrated on the Hindenburg and the other German airships of the time, it would have been a much shorter book, but it also would have been about what the title and sub-title promised it was about.

Historia
From the young airmen who took their frail machines high above the trenches of World War I and fought their foes in single combat, there emerged a renowned company of brilliant aces - among them Ball, Bishop, McCudden, Collishaw, and Mannock - whose legendary feats have echoed down half a century. But behind the elite pilots in the Royal Flying Corps, there were many hundreds of airmen who flew their hazardous daily sorties in outdated planes without ever achieving fame.

Moving
Revisado: 11-29-23
Using a personal narrative, the author reveals what it was like to be a British pilot in the first world war. The endless missions, the terrible cold, the camaraderie, the toll the constant fighting, constant danger, and constant death brought about in the psyche of the pilots who had to face it, the difficulties faced day to day, the ineptitude of the overall war plan ... it's all here and it unfolds beautifully as the book goes along.
If you want to know what life was like for a WW I ace who managed to survive the war through skill and a great deal of luck, this book is for you.

Two of the great themes of the Civil War are how Lincoln found his war-winning general in Ulysses Grant and how Grant finally defeated Lee. Grant's Victory intertwines these two threads in a grand narrative that shows how Grant made the difference in the war.

Misleading Title and Description
Revisado: 11-29-23
This book is a decent summary of the Eastern campaign of the Civil War. It covers several major battles in some detail, It goes into command decisions, the difficulties faced by both sides, and examines some of the crucial moments that led to a Northern Victory.
What it does not do is talk much about Grant. In fact, Grant is barely mentioned in the first half of the book. Even after Grant comes on the scene, he's mainly referenced simply as the overall commander. As such, he plays no more a major role in the second half of the book than he did in the first.
This is NOT the story of how Ulysses S. Grant Won the Civil War.
This is NOT a book about Ulysses S. Grant.
Both the Title and Sub-Title are misleading. The promises made in the book's description are not fulfilled.
The sad thing is that this is a decently written book. If the title and description better matched the contents, I would have given it more stars.

A couple of jerks wake me up at the crack of noon. Seems my klepto uncle stole an ancient deck of Tarot cards from a high-powered wizard, and too many losers want to ruin my day to get them back. The cards are cool, so I check them out, but my magic-happy cousin, Sabrina, tells me I'm not supposed to touch them. Oops. Too late. Now the damn cards are tuned to me, and if someone else wants to use them, I have to die. Why couldn't she have led with that information?

Just plain fun
Revisado: 03-25-23
I get so unbelievably tired of novels that take themselves too seriously. After all, novels are meant to be enjoyable. And this novel is just plain fun.
There's plenty of sassy humor but there's also non-stop action. Our reluctant hero doesn't want any of it, but he does what he must and does it in an interesting way. When I picked up this novel to read, I was looking for something that would be enjoyable. This novel was exactly that and I find myself wondering why it's not a bestseller.
The narration is good, the novel delivers on what it promises, and you feel good reading it all the way from the start to The End. I especially liked the fact that it's set in Galveston. I've never been there myself, but having read this novel, I feel like I know the place and would really like to go there.
Finally, while the tone of this novel is light, the magic system is detailed and has plenty of potential for the series. I can only hope that the author will keep cranking these books out for a long time to come.

Well Written
Revisado: 09-24-22
Simplified enough to be eminently readable but loaded with evocative details, this work does an excellent job taking us through the history of the Tenth Roman Legion from its inception under Julius Ceasar to its eventual diminishment and demise as Roman glory faded and fell.

Always read the fine print. Especially when you’re making a deal with the devil. Because demons are sneaky bastards. That’s how they got me. Well, and the rest of my hometown. A few hours of what I asked for and then we were all dragged to Hell. Luckily, those jokes about lawyers and Hell are pretty accurate. After a lengthy court case downstairs, I’ve been released on Hell’s very first work-release program with a time limit and a quota. All I have to do is hunt down and kill the things that go bump in the night.

New Author, New Series, Read!
Revisado: 09-27-21
It's always a little uncertain when you pick up a novel from a new author and a new series. I do it because I'm looking for books I can read (hopefully more than one book) where I enjoy the books, enjoy the series, and enjoy the characters. With luck, I'll have some fun along the way.
At this point, I'm well along in this series and decided I should share my thoughts with folks who are considering whether this first book in a series is worth buying.
Oh ya.
This series is amazing in the way it starts out as just fun stuff. If you like the Supernatural TV series, you should already be reading this series of books. Lots of fun supernatural creatures, good characters, interesting story, lots of action, told in a deceptively simple and honest narrative that will have you thinking of these characters as your friends--or at least people you know--in no time at all.
It's true that the main character's (Bane's) language can be a little crude at times. But don't worry. Rosetta's there to take her to task for her potty mouth. Noah's along for the ride... literally... and there's always some big bad lurking just on this side of radio reception that will lead to the next great adventure. But it's so much more wonderfully complex than that. And it's a great listen, too. I really like the narrator. I think she captures the characters extremely well. She does an especially great job of sounding like I think the main character would. And I love the humor! It's so hard to find these days.
The best news? There are tons of books in this series and they're coming out as audible books fast and furious. Heck, by the time you read this, the whole series will probably be done. So no George R. R. Martin here. No Robert Jordan. If you're the type who can't wait for the next book to come out, this is a great series. If you're always looking for another great book to read, this series has you covered.
I'll just add that now that I'm way into the series, everything you read seems like it comes into play later in an unexpected way. Nothing is wasted or throw-away. Each book leads seamlessly into the next book. The series all hangs together. There's real danger, there's real emotion, and there's lots of energy--and some nice sass that keeps everything moving and brings a smile to your face. And surprises, too. Just when I think I know what's going to happen next, something better happens that I couldn't even imagine.
So... highly recommended. Not just this book, but the whole series (at least what I've read so far). Get to it.

Historia
The "unsinkable” Titanic was four city blocks long, with a French “sidewalk café,” private promenade decks, and the latest, most ingenious safety devices… but only twenty lifeboats for the 2,207 passengers and crew on board.
Gliding through a calm sea, disdainful of all obstacles, the Titanic brushed an iceberg. Two hours and forty minutes later, she upended and sank. Only 705 survivors were picked up from the half-filled boats of “the ship that God Himself couldn’t sink.”
