Historia
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Alright
Revisado: 06-27-21
Story wise the story was ok, but I felt the ending was a bit too rushed and it just felt like the author wanted to be done with it. The interaction between the two main characters makes little sense. But otherwise it gave a good look of the life of Snow.
The narrator did a fine job of doing male voices but was horrible with the female voices. The absolute worst was all the songs which he absolutely butchered. They should have done something else with the songs

Great story
Revisado: 02-14-20
This is an interesting science fiction story about a mysterious carved-out asteroid that shows up on Earth’s doorstep right before a catastrophe is about to decimate the Earth.
Right off the bat, the book has dated itself because it was written so long ago. There is a running thread through the whole book about the USA vs USSR and the book assumes the soviet union never broke up. It also assumes advanced events happen in the early 2000’s. If you can overlook all of that, then the story is still fairly enjoyable. Speaking of the USSR, their reasons for causing a global war were never really satisfactory and I felt it was just a plot device (it could have been any country and had the same effect).
The plot never got too slow, and the characters were somewhat developed enough to make the story good. The real star is the asteroid (called the stone), with all of its mysteries slowly revealed, and the dealings with time, space, and alternate realities.
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this and look forward to trying the sequels.
NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Historia
Roselle St. Sismode is many things: victim of a conspiracy, unwilling host of an ever-evolving mind algorithm, spy for a rebel army, and heir to the Fate of Swords. As a warrior, she’s also the anticipated main event at the Secondborn Trials. When the opening ceremonies erupt in chaos, Roselle is abducted by a sadistic agent with a diabolical plan: transform Roselle into a mind-controlled assassin to topple society. But a rogue scientist has implanted Roselle with a genius technology that is far more powerful. It renders her untouchable. Faster. Stronger. And maybe immortal.

Not like the other two
Revisado: 02-04-20
So this book took a completely different turn from the other two. I was expecting more of a book about how they rebuild society and put Roselle in charge, but instead it goes off into a wild science fiction direction about mind-controlled humans (introduced at the end of book 2), and a fantasy about gods. This did seem a bit disconnected from the first two, even though there was a few tiny hints here and there about where the trilogy was heading.
Once I put my expectations aside and just listened to the story, it became pretty good. Crowe was still one-dimensional but there was a tiny, tiny bit of exposition about his past. Roselle ultimately becomes extremely strong and thus faced little obstacles, but it was still an entertaining read and at least closed the story satisfactory. Overall, a good if not strange conclusion to the series.

A really good fantasy
Revisado: 01-28-20
At first I found it hard to get into this novel, which was set in a historical Russian village and seemed to have a rather weak premise. But as the story unfolded, I came to enjoy Matrona's character and the magic of the world she was dealing with. I will say that most of the characters are rather flat, but that is actually a part of the plot. I would have enjoyed more back story and also a lot more story after the end (maybe a sequel). But overall, it was a great read and listen.

Pretty good except the end
Revisado: 01-08-20
The second book of this series was more of the same. The stakes are raised significantly during the book, and for the most part, added some good tension. The ending though kindof comes out of nowhere and really throws the believability out the window, not to mention make plot holes much more glaring. Despite that, it is still an entertaining read and I'd like to see how the third book turned out.

Enjoyable dystopia
Revisado: 01-08-20
Secondborn is a dystopia with the concept that people would be oppressed based on their birth order. If someone was first-born, they are privileged, but second-born are property of the state upon maturity, and third-borns are killed. The main character in the novel is Roselle, who is second-born and is thrust into ad adventure to change the fate of her world. The first book is mainly dealing with Roselle's transition to being a soldier and navigating her new life thereafter. I found the story to be very entertaining, and Roselle to be a pretty strong character. It had a good page-turner quality, and I really enjoyed the story. I would say the whole setup, plot, world-building, etc. do have some questionable underpinnings, but not enough to keep one from enjoying the story. The narration was super grest as well. I look forward to hearing the rest of the series.

Pretty good second book
Revisado: 12-16-19
This was a pretty good followup to Cinder. The characters were pretty well-done and the plot was non-stop. I enjoyed both Cinder's story and Scarlet's. However, Scarlet acted recklessly and naively throughout most of the novel, and the whole human-wolf hybrid thing is kindof strange. Emperor Kai is a bit of a wimp too. The narration was very well done, although I never did get used to Scarlet's accent. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book.

Historia
This classic tale is a fantastical fable of two dear friends - one of whom goes astray and is literally lost to the north woods, while the other undertakes an epic journey to rescue him. This charming, strange, and wonderful story is a timeless allegory about growing up and the challenges of staying true to one's self, and it served as the wintry inspiration for the blockbuster hit Frozen.

Not very good as a story
Revisado: 12-09-19
Supposed to be a classic, but I found the story to be rather disjointed and uninspired. The separate chapters have little connection to each other, there is little to no depth here, and as a fairytale, it doesn't seem to really teach any moral or idea. There is some story here, but no more than a paragraph. It could simply be a product of the times, or perhaps the translation. The narration was fine though.

Not age-targeted very well
Revisado: 12-09-19
This is a slapstick, science fiction in the likes of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, that goes for absurd humor. I found the book entertaining and listened to the entire thing, but I felt like the humor was very juvenile so targeted to young teenagers, but it had a ton of profanity that doesn't really make it YA. I feel like if the profanity wasn't there, this could be considered a children's book. Also, the epilogue just completely fell apart.

Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Great
Revisado: 12-06-19
This is a classic that holds up surprisingly well. I didn't realize it was almost 50 years old as the technology is handled quite well. There is a lot of great imagination in this book about what other civilizations could be or do, and the plot was all about character interaction and exploring the mystery of the ring world. Overall, it was a great story and very entertaining. The narrator had a great voice and did a superb job for the entire book.
