Historia
Once described by Mao Zedong as a "needle inside a ball of cotton", Deng was the pragmatic yet disciplined driving force behind China's radical transformation in the late 20th century. He confronted the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, dissolved Mao's cult of personality, and loosened the policies that had stunted China's growth. Obsessed with modernization, Deng opened trade relations with the West, which lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. Yet he also answered to his authoritarian roots, most notably when he ordered the crackdown in 1989 at Tiananmen Square.

In excellent book… I learned so much about the history of China. The book is full of details, and this left me with the sense of the texture of the moment… I will be traveling in China later this year and I feel like I will have greater insight into it’s history from this book. I highly recommend

Historia
Established in 1918–19, in the wake of Germany’s catastrophic defeat in the First World War and the revolution that followed swiftly on its heels, the Weimar Republic ushered in widespread social reform, a radical cultural flowering and the most democratic conditions the German people had ever known. The Weimar Years is a vivid narrative of a dramatic period in German history. Year by year, from 1918 to 1933, Frank McDonough covers the major events in both domestic and foreign policy and the personalities who shaped them, together with developments in music, art, theatre and literature.

Historia
As one of the most potent turning points in the country's modern history, the Opium War has since come to stand for everything that today's China seeks to put behind it. In this dramatic, epic story, award-winning historian Stephen Platt sheds new light on the early attempts by Western traders and missionaries to "open" China even as China's imperial rulers were struggling to manage their country's decline and Confucian scholars grappled with how to use foreign trade to China's advantage.

Revisado: 08-16-24
This is an outstanding book about the history of the opium war, but more broadly about the history of China, British colonialism, early American international efforts. The author does a very nice job, painting a picture of the times. And the book is also very well read

In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

An important book
Revisado: 06-15-24
I learned a great deal reading this book, and I was surprised how successful the author is in pulling themes through a survey of American history. The narration does not do the book justice, I still strongly recommend it.

Learned so much, recommend for every American
Revisado: 04-08-24
I have been reading into American history for several years now (not my field), and this is definitely one of the books that I will recommend to all in my circle. I learned so much, and I found this evidence based analysis of a dark period in our history to be incredibly compelling. Unfortunately, the narration is fine, but not great. Still, I recommend this book with enthusiasm.

Thomas Jefferson asserted that if there was any leader of the Revolution, “Samuel Adams was the man.” With high-minded ideals and bare-knuckle tactics, Adams led what could be called the greatest campaign of civil resistance in American history. Stacy Schiff returns Adams to his seat of glory, introducing us to the shrewd and eloquent man who supplied the moral backbone of the American Revolution, bringing her masterful skills to Adams’s improbable life, illuminating his transformation from aimless son of a well-off family to tireless, beguiling radical who mobilized the colonies.

Historia
Frontier: the word carries the inevitable scent of the West. But before Custer or Lewis and Clark, before the first Conestoga wagons rumbled across the Plains, it was the East that marked the frontier - the boundary between complex Native cultures and the first colonizing Europeans. Here is the older, wilder, darker history of a time when the land between the Atlantic and the Appalachians was contested ground - when radically different societies adopted and adapted the ways of the other, while struggling for control of what all considered to be their land.

I recommend the book for a textured description of frontier life in North America. I enjoyed what I learned, despite the narration… Here I felt the narrator was doing a job, and lacked enthusiasm for this interesting topic.

I wasn’t really ready for the style of this book, which reflects quite a bit about the author, as well as about Nixon. I also did not enjoy this narrator, though, perhaps that was simply a style thing.

One of today's premier biographers, Jean Edward Smith, has written a modern, comprehensive, indeed ultimate book on the epic life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This is a portrait painted in broad strokes and fine details. We see how Roosevelt's restless energy, fierce intellect, personal magnetism, and ability to project effortless grace permitted him to master countless challenges throughout his life. Smith recounts FDR's personal battles and also tackles head-on and in depth the numerous failures and miscues of Roosevelt's political career.

Biased and “thin”
Revisado: 09-27-23
I definitely learned a lot about FDR in this book, but I also learned about the prejudices of the author… I found the telling the history to be very biased. Perhaps more worrisome, the bias of the author seem to be covert… I’m going to have to read more.
