Historia
Riley is so confident and kind, and she and Valerie bond quickly over existing as multiracial teens in a very white Christian community. As Valerie explores her feelings for Riley, she begins to see that the world she knows is a carefully crafted narrative. Publicly, the girls are close friends—holding hands in prayer, rooming together at a conference. Privately, they grasp at any chance to continue their forbidden romance—until they are found out. Now, Valerie must choose between staying with a family she fears will never accept her, or running away with the girl she loves.

A story I didn't know I needed
Revisado: 06-17-24
This book was so healing for my inner child. I didn't realize how much of this I would relate to and how powerful it was to see an alternate telling of how many of our stories went. So thankful to the author for writing this.

Good tips, but falls short
Revisado: 03-23-18
The author gives a lot of helpful tips but falls significantly short of "zero waste". She mentions throughout the book how she's not a vegan (and incorrectly uses the word carnivore) but then talks about how people should reduce car use and take navy showers. The number one contributor to air and water pollution (as well as deforestation and antibiotic resistance) is factory farming. Making one hamburger uses the same amount of water as flushing your toilet for six months. She also lives in an area that allows veganism to be not only a viable option, but an easy one. This book is fine for quick tips but does not give a comprehensive picture of zero watse.
