Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Excellent narrator. The story takes you back to Gothic Victorian literature, which have dramatic cliffhangers and happy endings.

Historia
Exposing his father’s transgressions in a tell-all was the ethical, righteous--and profitable--thing to do. What’s left but to slink back home for a humbling face-to-face with the man whose secrets he sold? He was a notorious government whistle-blower. Depending on whom you ask, he’s a treasonous felon, a folk hero, a validated patriot, or a national disgrace. To his son, Michael, he’s the father who threw his family into upheaval. Now, having moved back home at the age of thirty-four, Michael is getting to know him as a man.

Not Funny
Revisado: 01-31-23
Overwrought, trying too hard to be satirical and funny, but it is not.
I don't think this works well with the other short stories in this series.

Historia
After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Inside, something deadly lies in wait.

Excellent, Excellent Book!!
Revisado: 11-21-20
Michael McDowell was a very gifted writer.
The narrator was perfect, too.
The narrative draws you into the believable family saga, where unbelievable things happen. The total creepy enjoyment that I love.
McDowell's Blackwater saga was the best, but Elementals is close second.
I hope to find more to read by this author.

Historia
Dismissed by a bored author at a book signing, a betrayed young man named David Sedaris made a vow. Someday, when it was his turn at the table, he’d connect with his readers. The experience has been even more revealing than he’d hoped. In this hilarious and perceptive essay, the celebrated humorist reflects on the unusual patterns of forced socialization between author and audience, and the obligations and sometimes surprising returns of not-so-chance encounters with strangers: jokes, secrets, insights, and even charity.

Historia
Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing - a neutral space in Hell where all the stories unfinished by their authors reside. Her job consists mainly of repairing and organizing books, but also of keeping an eye on restless stories that risk materializing as characters and escaping the library. When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto.

Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover
Revisado: 01-21-20
This is one case where I totally judged and bought the book by it's cover. I think the cover graphic is great! And the title! How funny is that? Hell's library of unfinished books!
I bought the hardback, intending to give to my niece, who is an unfinished author and I bought the Audible version because I thought it would be fun to listen to.
The setting is great and the characters are good. The dialogue is witty, but getting tiresome by 60% into the book. The plot is getting away from the original antics of the librarians catching the characters trying to escape from their unfinished books and morphing into a heaven & Earth giant struggle of good vs evil that I enjoyed in Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch but don't feel like reading about here.
So, I am dissapointed, I thought I would like this one.

Revisado: 01-17-20
The well thought out plot kept my interest all the way through.
I love all the well imagined characters, both based on real people, as well as the fictional protagonists.
And Rachel Atkins versatile narration really brings all the characters to life!
I couldn't wait each day to start listening and want to read more about the Mitfords and my favorite sleuths!
