Valley Forge is the riveting true story of an underdog US toppling an empire. Using new and rarely seen contemporaneous documents - and drawing on a cast of iconic characters and remarkable moments that capture the innovation and energy that led to the birth of our nation - the New York Times best-selling authors Bob Drury and Tom Clavin provide a breathtaking account of this seminal and previously undervalued moment in the battle for American independence.

New insight
Revisado: 03-09-25
As a casual American history buff, I learned a story a had never new besides a general story. Amazed at the detail displayed and research writing this book must have required. As I’m hard of hearing the performance is important to me and this reading excels. The book as the title depicts is not just about Washington and the war, but focuses on a 10 month period in the fall of 1777 to the spring of 1778. The story covers general tactics, supplies, munitions, politics and the people on both sides that made up the war in this period. I enjoyed it.

Historia
Five days after Abraham Lincoln was buried in Springfield, Illinois, John Locke Scripps, who had convinced Lincoln to write his first campaign autobiography, asserted that the 16th president had become "the Great American Man-the grand central figure in American (perhaps the World's) History." Historians still find it hard to quibble with Scripps's opinion."

Hard to hear at times
Revisado: 03-07-24
I liked the voice and story but it also was a tad irritating. He started out most sentences loud and with emphasis and then the last few words trail off into almost a whisper. I spent too. Much time rewinding , turning volume up to hear key words, always at the end of sentences.

History buff was hesitant but..
Revisado: 07-07-23
I’ve read dozens of WWII books and am always looking for obscure stories and this one fit the bill and didn’t disappoint. Like most I never heard about this event and learned a lot. The backstories of the political corruption that was apparently widespread and the lives of those involved during the war filled the book nicely.

Historia
On July 10, 1943, the largest amphibious invasion ever mounted took place, larger even than the Normandy invasion 11 months later: 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops came ashore or were parachuted onto Sicily, signaling the start of the campaign to defeat Nazi Germany on European soil. Operation HUSKY, as it was known, was enormously complex, involving dramatic battles on land, in the air, and at sea. Yet, despite its paramount importance to ultimate Allied victory, and its drama, very little has been written about the 38-day Battle for Sicily.

Uncovered major campaign of WWII
Revisado: 03-21-23
I’ve read about a dozen books on WWII but this campaign was totally new to me and I’m glad I read it. The only thing I thought could have been better was more detail on the individuals who fought there. The author touched on a few major players, soldiers, airman and civilians but I never felt connected to them like in so many other books. Still it was great story about a part of the war I knew very little about.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Narrator was a little much for me
Revisado: 01-30-23
I listen through my hearing aides and the narrator was entertaining but would frequently get loud during “ejaculations” as
they used the term back them. Other than that it was a good read.

Historia
The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

WWII story I never read before
Revisado: 01-15-23
I’ve read many books on European and Pacific battles and campaigns but this was entirely new to me. Amazing struggles for US army as they learned how to fight and how to kill. Not as many personal stories as I’d like, where you get to know the characters, but it gave the story of the US Army’s first major campaign and they struggles they had to over come. In depth explanations on the issues of leadership of the various armies that fought the axis, their biases and again how they learned to be winners. It was amazing how inept the US logistical supply chain was and what I took away was that if it wasn’t for the US industrial might at that time., the war would have been far longer and cost many more lives.

The harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi. 13 Hours presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism.

I read this book with the intention of learning historical news to me and it didn’t disappoint. Most of the info was need to me. I was ignorant of the CIA contractors roles in protecting US agents in foreign lands. Well told story with enough background to lay the groundwork for the real story which of course is the 13 hours. Got to know each character enough to care and appreciated it left out all the political drama normally connected to this tragedy.

Rufus R. Dawes (1838-1899) was just 23 years old when the Civil War broke out. He became a captain in the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, one of the regiments forming the "Iron Brigade" of the Union Army of the Potomac. First published in 1890, this work records his regiment’s routine and operational actions, including Second Bull Run, Gettysburg, and Petersburg. Dawes also recorded details about daily camp life and individual soldiers.

Excellent account of 6th Wisconsin from forming to 1864.
Revisado: 02-19-22
I’ve read many historical accounts of civil war, mostly written by generals and historians, and this was completely different. Being from Wisconsin I had to read it and wasn’t disappointed. Much different view of battles and the day to day life of a civil war soldier than others I’ve read. From how they obtained uniforms, drilled, ate and slept to horrific injuries and death. What I found most enlightening wa Shia account of the regular court martial hearings he presided over. Very good and well narrated.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

Classic
Revisado: 12-29-21
I have read many other books on the terrible history of the American Indians. The others told parts but this is an all encompassing story of most of the major tribes and the horrific way they were treated by our government, army and individuals. There are many quotes from survivors and those who wrote down what actually occurred. The book is broken down into separate stories by chapter, well narrated and is a book all Americans should read.

Historia
By early 1945 the destruction of the German Nazi State seems certain. The Allied forces, led by American generals George S. Patton and Dwight D. Eisenhower, are gaining control of Europe, leaving German leaders scrambling. Facing defeat, Adolf Hitler flees to a secret bunker with his new wife, Eva Braun, and his beloved dog, Blondi. It is there that all three would meet their ends, thus ending the Third Reich and one of the darkest chapters of history.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-11-21
For the most part I enjoy O’Reilly’s Killing series of books but Hitler’s Last Days was a waste. It’s very short, spends more time on Patton than Hitler and has large sections that are cut and pastes from Killing Patton. There is nothing new in this book that can’t be found elsewhere.!
