Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Historia
Virtually no one in the village of Castillac holds out any hope. It has been seven years, after all. Seven years since the popular, mischievous Valerie Boutillier disappeared without a trace. The exertions of the gendarmes, led by Chief Dufort, yielded almost no clues, and his failure to solve the case had been one of the main reasons he quit the force.

Not my favorite Sutton mystery
Revisado: 10-10-18
The theme of a girl held prisoner was creepy and the solving of the crime dragged. There were too many frustrating missed opportunities to tell the police. Molly and Dufort are appealing characters, however.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Stunning story, exquisite writing
Revisado: 08-06-12
What made the experience of listening to East of Eden the most enjoyable?
Steinbeck's writing is so beautiful, and listening to it enhanced the experience.
What was one of the most memorable moments of East of Eden?
The ending was absolutely overwhelming. I was stunned by its eloquence.
What does Richard Poe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He brings expression, dialect, and mood to the experience
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The first two thirds were terrifying. One of the main characters is a horrifying character, and I almost couldn't read it because I was so afraid of what she would do next. However, once she meets her demise, I relaxed into the rest of the book, and cried for a long time when it was over.
Any additional comments?
An unforgettable book--beautifully written, a slice of life that has never been described in such a way before, terrifying and deeply moving.
