Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Historia
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

The Netflix series told a different story about the same characters and world but both are good. The audio has a loud background hiss that made listening with headphones difficult.

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

Formidable follow up to 3 Body
Revisado: 06-03-16
I really wish I had learned Chinese instead of French in high school so I could read the third book right away. Dark Forest is intense, near future, hard science fiction that keeps you on edge from beginning to end. It doesn't read like a translation, which is a testament to the skill of Martinson. Narration was solid, good character voices and good pace.

Historia
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

Decent universe, splotchy storyline
Revisado: 06-09-15
What was most disappointing about Greg Dragon’s story?
I didn't like sudden jumps forward in time in the middle of what I thought were going to be extended detailed scenes that would setup the next few chapters. Also, the Phasers acquired a new power every few chapters with little backstory. The leader of the Phasers is feared all over the galaxy but is a complete wuss when it comes to women, he cowers when scolded by several female characters.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anisha Dadia?
Part of it was the recording, it was extremely flat. Anisha was raspy and nasaly, it got better near the end but she did not deliver a solid narration. I expect a smooth, soft tone with female narrators.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The universe with the Phasers and Geralos has a lot of potential. I may revisit the series down the line but I'll wait for a more focused storyline within the universe.

Dated, but a feel-good sci-fi story
Revisado: 05-26-15
What did you love best about Have Space Suit - Will Travel?
The genuine nature and bravery of Kip.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It's hard not to like Kip, his adventure tested his resolve and he made unselfish, brave decisions all over the galaxy.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It had a few funny moments, definitely showed its age.
Any additional comments?
Feel good sci-fi is hard to come by, this is a great quick listen even for the non-sci-fi junkies.

Historia
By identifying the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time, Watson was only 24, a young scientist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science's greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries.

Interesting story but biased point of view
Revisado: 05-26-15
What did you like best about The Double Helix? What did you like least?
The circumstances that had to come together for the discovery were fascinating.
Would you ever listen to anything by James D. Watson again?
Probably not. His attitude toward that others involved was rude and unappreciative.
Would you be willing to try another one of Grover Gardner and Roger Clark ’s performances?
Sure,
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Absolutely not.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

A space story for the detail oriented
Revisado: 05-26-15
Would you listen to The Martian again? Why?
I will read it again before the movie comes out.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Mark suggested the Iron Man maneuver in the most intense chapter of the book I lost it. Mark's positive attitude and approach to problem solving was inspiring.
Any additional comments?
The details of the problem solving were fantastic, definitely geared toward the more scientific crowd. I feel like I'm prepared to go live on Mars for a few sols.

A solid post-apocalyptic tale, with a few holes
Revisado: 05-26-15
Where does First Activation rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The story has some shortcomings but Jack and Harry are solid characters that you want to root for. I immediately picked up and started the Second Activation once I finished up the First Activation. It's not my favorite post-apocalyptic novel but it's an interesting story.
What other book might you compare First Activation to and why?
The First Activation stops pretty suddenly the Second Activation picks up at the exact moment the first book ends.
What about James Langton’s performance did you like?
James' girl voice is a bit strange, the male characters are solid.
Any additional comments?
Don't get attached to anyone Jack and Harry meet.
