Historia
Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summer crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday. They are, in fact, birthday twins. A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life.

Historia
The end of the world? That’s the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters and deep philosophical exercises in school. No need to sweat it. So when 16-year-old Tess’ doomsday-dad builds a bomb shelter in their suburban backyard, everyone thinks he’s gone crazy—until fire rains down from the sky, sinking whole cities into colossal craters and setting much of the world ablaze.

Made me look forward to rush hour!
Revisado: 10-19-23
I was completely absorbed in this story. My highest praise for an audio book is to look forward to rush hour, cleaning the kitchen, laundry… any task so I could hear more.
Intriguing characters, exciting plotting and great narration.
I can’t wait for the sequel!

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Enjoyable: great pacing and well narrated.
Revisado: 12-22-22
I enjoyed this book. It's set in the 60's and some fictional elements were a bit over the top, but this is fiction.
I found myself happy to sit in traffic or fold laundry so I could listen to this story. To me, that's the ultimate praise for an audio book.
The main character has a cooking show. I was a little suspicious of some of the tv production elements (I'm a huge Julia Child fan). But I let it go because I was fully entertained.
The narrator is English (I think?) and there were a few oddly pronounced words, but overall the performance was great.

Oof. Not Weiner’s best
Revisado: 11-13-22
I get that Weiner is trying to play the beach novel game. She’s an amazing writer and this did not hit the mark. I understand she was trying to shock and startle… but yuck on so many levels.

His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. I enjoyed the first half of the book: interesting story and nice pacing. Great for driving and doing laundry. The 2nd half was pure drivel: people magazine fantasy. I felt disgusted and embarrassed for the author.

outdated and boring tech thriller. I gave up.
Revisado: 01-01-17
Would you try another book from Joseph Finder and/or Scott Brick?
The narrator is great. Not sure if Joseph Finder likes douchey guys but I didn't like the main character or actually any of the characters
What do you think your next listen will be?
Not sure. I feel burned from this one.
What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?
He had enthusiasm and energy. I would have given up earlier.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom, and a sense of great relief that I don't work in the tech world. I couldn't even figure out what city they were supposed to be in- I thought it was manhattan but why would you drive to a bar? So confused.
Any additional comments?
Ugh. I chose this because it popped up on reader's favorites. I guess if you are not familiar with mobile technology from the last 10 years it might be interesting.

Ghost written nonsense for the elderly
Revisado: 06-02-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I could enjoy listening to Tony Roberts read the phone book. This is a close second. I like the comfort and familiarity of Stuart Woods' Stone Barrington books. I don't mind the shopping at Ralph Lauren, Sea Island Cotton Shirts, description of cars, etc. I am baffled by the enthusiasm for: buffet dinners, adjustable beds, eating in bed and dumb new addition of a dog named Bob who goes to restaurants. NO NO NO.
What do you think your next listen will be?
10% Happier
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It is almost exactly like the other books, except the plot was quite boring. I forgot I had 15 minutes left on the book. Eh.
Any additional comments?
Time for a new ghost writer.

Great plot, well narrated, very entertaining
Revisado: 03-27-15
What did you love best about Run Before the Wind?
nice character development, great narration.
What did you like best about this story?
I am very interested in England/ Ireland cultural tension from the 60's and 70's and found it fascinating.
What does Rick Holmes and John Keating bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
local accents.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was sad when it ended. I ordered chiefs thinking it would be a prequel of the same excellent quality (no)
Any additional comments?
I usually find boating and sailing details boring but the narration was great and it didn't bother me.

unlistenable: drunk uncle saliva sounds
Revisado: 03-27-15
What would have made Chiefs better?
A narrator that did not sound drunk or like he had some sort of saliva issue.
If you’ve listened to books by Stuart Woods before, how does this one compare?
HORRIBLE. I got about 10 minutes in. I've never ever attempted to listen to such a poor narrator. Mouth smacking, obvious saliva sounds. The narrator sounds like he's about to nod off sometimes. I should have listened to an audio sample, but other audio Stuart Woods books have been quite good. Have you seen "drunk uncle" on SNL? That's what the narrator sounds like, with a side of Carl Kassel (I like Carl Kassel but he is getting older and has that wet mouth issue as well) I don't understand the point of reading so slowly with strangely placed pauses.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I could not listen to it.
What character would you cut from Chiefs?
The narrator
Any additional comments?
I've listened to most of the Stuart Woods books, they are great if you want to be distracted while driving/ doing laundry/ running/ etc. I chose to turn this book off and concentrate on sitting in rush hour in silence.
