Historia
With his mother in jail, Sequoyah, a 15-year-old Cherokee boy, is placed in foster care with the Troutt family. Literally and figuratively scarred by his unstable upbringing, Sequoyah has spent years mostly keeping to himself, living with his emotions pressed deep below the surface - that is, until he meets the 17-year-old Rosemary, another youth staying with the Troutts. Sequoyah and Rosemary bond over their shared Native American backgrounds and paths through the foster care system, but as Sequoyah's feelings toward Rosemary deepen, the precariousness of their lives and the scars of their pasts threaten to undo them both.

Expected more knowing native couture
Revisado: 02-19-25
What made me most upset is that he relied on native imagery but didn’t follow through . It MATTERS what kind of birds in the various parts of the book. the dream Lore of (spoiler) about a house was not explored as foreshadowing. Shame.

Historia
Based on actual events that happened between 2005 and 2009 in a remote Mennonite community where more than 100 girls and women were drugged unconscious and assaulted in the night by what they were told (by the men of the colony) were "ghosts" or "demons", Miriam Toews' bold and affecting novel Women Talking is an imagined response to these real events.

What a stupid book. It’s like Margaret Atwood met slaughterhouse 5
It wants me to keep writing
A man narrating a “woman’s thoughts” should have tipped me off

Hadn’t heard of it till reading a History Plaque at Tween-Waters Resort in Captiva, Fl
Revisado: 08-17-22
We come down to Captiva about four times a year and take turns among the resorts. Last January we read the plaque and I just had to get Gift from the Sea. Wow! I love it so that I gave it my bridesmaids who served at our wedding at the quaint Chapel by the Sea here in Captiva.
It gives a wisdom to women - and men my husband loves it too - that many need to learn. It’s a gentle read and this time we heard it from the Ding Darling cottage. Good sweet memories. Glad it’s still in print after 67 years.

I will return because he started with a lie
Revisado: 10-15-20
The opening story was not his friend in Az. That is a very well known, classic parable on scarcity and perceived desirability.
Can’t get past his attempts at a non fiction by starting with a lie.

Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

I expected something positive
Revisado: 11-11-19
I expected something a lot different.. retuning this. because 5 minutes in it's been full of strife and murder of African Americans. I really wasnt wanting to be positioned to be upset in that way. Live audio of African Americans being abused by police really wasnt in the same universe of what I was hoping for.

Love it more than when I read the book 30 years ago
Revisado: 01-24-19
This is the third time I’ve read/listened to this book. Now that I’m older, I love it all the more. There are some static issues 3/4 of the way through but the performance is otherwise great.
Definitely still a classic.

Revisado: 01-24-19
I was pretty excited when I saw this new subscription because I love guided meditations at night . I couldn't believe it she was talking so fast and so stressful I only got two minutes into it so maybe his fetter feel myself tensing up she talks very very fast and she some of the things she says makes reminds me of things that she's trying to tell me to forget it's like telling me to not think about a white polar bear just don't mention it and get to the meditation. however I think audible zydia is a great one and I hope in the future to find more relaxing guided meditations

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.
