Historia
On Mars, in the distant future, the princess Haydn's arranged marriage cannot save her beloved Republic. Her arch-enemy, the warrior-woman Frane, seeks to make herself Queen while Haydn - the legitimate heir - must flee for her life. A reluctant symbol for those who would restore the monarchy, Haydn is too young and unprepared to assume the throne - but determined to become a great Queen. With a bounty on her head, she will journey to the realization that - in order to save her world - she must sacrifice all that she holds dear.

They are cats....
Revisado: 03-11-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the book even though cats were characters in the novel, but not in the cutsie purr, purr, purr way of Sneakie Pie. I am a dog person of course. I am an easy listener meaning that I enjoy just about anything, though I can be critical. Here, the characters could have been any kind of being-cat, dog, whatever, and the science fiction blended modern and medieval weapons.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It moves the plot along, but some of the characters are knocked off before fully developed.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Harriet Fraser?
Sure--she did a good job.
Did Haydn of Mars inspire you to do anything?
Look for the second novel in the series.
Any additional comments?
I think this book was meant for a younger audience.

Historia
The Ibis, loaded to its gunwales with a cargo of indentured servants, is in the grip of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal; among the dozens flailing for survival are Neel, the pampered raja who has been convicted of embezzlement; Paulette, the French orphan masquerading as a deck-hand; and Deeti, the widowed poppy grower fleeing her homeland with her lover, Kalua. The storm also threatens the clipper ship Anahita, groaning with the largest consignment of opium ever to leave India for Canton.

Great "read" but be prepared for close listening
Revisado: 03-19-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Sure. This book is a departure from my reads of late-Jonathan Maberry-the Joe Ledger Series. River of Smoke is the second in a series. Ghosh and the reader benefits from his background and research. It was a real education on the opium trade and the opium wars.
What about Sanjiv Jhaveri’s performance did you like?
I know other reviews panned Mr. Jhaveri's performance, but I though he did a fabulous job. There are many many difference accents and languages that make up this story. I enjoyed listening to this book, and the other members of my book club thought it would be a better listen than read. They struggled with the pigeon speak.
Any additional comments?
The first chapter tells the reader what happened to the people who were left on the boat at the end of the Sea of Poppies. I thought that this couldn't be the first part of the book (because it started out so many years after the boat landed).

Historia
Seven years ago, Professor Gabriel Kennedy's investigation into paranormal activity at Summer Place ended in tragedy, and destroyed his career. Now, Kelly Delaphoy, the ambitious producer of a top-rated ghost-hunting television series, is determined to make Summer Place the centerpiece of an epic live broadcast on Halloween night. To ensure success, she needs help from the one man who has come face-to-face with the evil that dwells in Summer Place, a man still haunted by the ghosts of his own failure. Disgraced and alienated from the academic community, Kennedy wants nothing to do with it. But Summer Place has other plans....

I had trouble putting this one down.
Revisado: 12-17-12
Would you try another book from David L. Golemon and/or Jeffrey Kafer?
I just checked and Audible doesn't have another book by Mr. Golemon in its catalogue. Perhaps Audible can create a section for authors we want to watch and buy from when they release a new read. I can only hope that Mr. G writes a sequel to this one. And now I am off to read "The Haunting of Hill House."
