Historia
What should we eat? It's a simple and fundamental question that still bewilders us despite a seemingly infinite amount of available information on which foods are best for our bodies. Scientists, dieticians, and even governments regularly publish research on the dangers of too much fat and sugar as well as on the benefits of exercise, and yet the global obesity crisis is only worsening. Most diet plans prove to be only short-term solutions, and few strategies work for everyone.

So much unpacking of studies and urban myths, in a digestible reading. Ok pun intended.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

First third of the book is OK
Revisado: 09-30-19
Back when I thought the book was a group of interlinked short stories, I was still happy. But as the book plodded on, and on, and on.... so many lectures about trees, so many awkward leaps of fictional faith, so many people in trees and falling out of trees and talking about trees or then protesting and struggling about trees for so many hours.... I just can’t. Rarely do I not finish a book but I gave this one so many chances. I’m done. I don’t care what happens at the end.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

entertaining war book?
Revisado: 07-17-15
I found the author's take on the Lusitania and the politics of the day very interesting, and dare I say, entertaining, along with all the detail on the people on board, and life on board. Erik Larson has a way of taking you back and filling in the color around historical events that not many writers can match.

On the last night of 1937, 25-year-old Katey Kontent is in a second-rate Greenwich Village jazz bar when Tinker Grey, a handsome banker, happens to sit down at the neighboring table. This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel Katey on a year-long journey into the upper echelons of New York society - where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve.

good way to kill time
Revisado: 07-17-15
Where does Rules of Civility rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I listened through to the end, which I can't say for all of them. So it was entertaining enough to listen to while taking a hot bath, or lying on a beach. And it involved no stress at all, so I could listen before bed.
What did you like best about this story?
The author's imaginings of what NYC in the 30's would have been like.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration was good at times, but at others the narrator failed the author.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No, it just caused me to wear my cynical hat and doubt the likelihood of the rags-to-riches stories.

Here is the astonishing new novel by the Man Booker Prize–winning author of The White Tiger, a book that took rage and anger at injustice and turned it into a thrilling murder story. Now, with the same fearlessness and insight, Aravind Adiga broadens his canvas to give us a riveting story of money and power, luxury and deprivation, set in the booming city of Mumbai.

From Pasadena to Cambridge to New York, Washington, D.C., India, Ceylon, Paris, Marseilles, Santa Barbara, and Maine, Bob Spitz re-creates an extraordinary life. He takes us beyond the image of Julia as the tall, eccentric woman with a funny voice who taught America how to cook, to establish her as a genuine rebel and beloved icon, a woman who redefined herself in middle age, helped to change the role of women in America, set the standard for how to create a public personality in the modern media world.

Historia
Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable.

long but worth it
Revisado: 01-03-12
I was hesitant about both the narrator and the book when I started about 50 hours ago, but now will be sad to see it end. I am finding that with classic novels, particularly those where class distinctions provide much of the context (Middlemarch, David Copperfield), a good narrator fills out the story in a way my own reading may not have.
